    Pediatric Clinical Nurse Coordinator – Oncology (Georgetown)

    In coordination with the Attending Physician, The Pediatric Clinical Nurse Coordinator in Oncology will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the care of pediatric patients diagnosed with cancer and hematological disorders. This role involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive and compassionate care, while also providing support to patients and their families throughout the treatment process. You bring to the role attention to detail, as you work to assure the monitoring and confirmation of service delivery and evaluation of health care services for patients and patient families. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies procedures and standards.

    Education:

    Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited academic nursing program required.

    Master's degree preferred.

    License/Certifications: RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required.

    CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required.

    Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Pediatric Nursing Certification (CPN) or Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) is desirable.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Previous experience in pediatric oncology nursing is preferred.
  • Knowledge of managed care and previous experience in case management is preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of current oncology treatments, protocols, and research.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Patient Coordination:
  • Coordinate and manage the care of pediatric oncology patients from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.
  • Oversees inpatient care progression by participating in daily rounds and using clinical judgement to identify discharge readiness.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
    1. Patient and Family Support:
  • Provide emotional support and education to pediatric patients and their families about the diagnosis, treatment options, and potential side effects.
  • Assist families in navigating the healthcare system, addressing concerns, and accessing additional resources.
    1. Education and Advocacy:
  • Educate patients and families on treatment plans, medications, and symptom management.
  • Advocate for the needs and preferences of pediatric oncology patients within the healthcare team.
    1. Care Coordination:
  • Facilitate communication among healthcare providers to ensure seamless and integrated care.
  • Obtains prior authorizations for home health needs, outpatient infusions, prescriptions, and specialty labs.
  • Coordinate appointments, inpatient admissions, tests, and procedures to optimize patient care and minimize disruptions.
    1. Documentation and Record Keeping:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting all aspects of care and communication.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and quality standards.
    1. Quality Improvement:
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the overall care provided to pediatric oncology patients.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to identify areas for improvement and implement evidence-based practices.

  • Engage in community outreach and education programs to raise awareness about pediatric oncology and available support services.
