    Redefining what an orchestra can be, the LA Phil is as vibrant as Los Angeles, one of the world's most open and dynamic cities. Led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, we believe in the transformative power of live music to build community, foster intellectual and artistic growth, and nurture the creative spirit.

    The Director, Public Relations will lead the LA Phil's PR efforts from strategy to execution. Reporting to the Senior Director, Communications, this role collaborates across the organization to amplify the brand of the LA Phil which includes Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, The Ford, YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) and the Beckmen YOLA Center in Inglewood.

    Position Elements:

    Strategy

  • Create a long-term, strategic public relations plan across the LA Phil portfolio of brands to secure placement of key stories that drive our brand and strategic priorities.
  • Build and nurture relationships with local, national and international press outlets and stakeholders to advance the LA Phil's position and profile in the media.
  • Develop and maintain our brand voice and messaging across all media-facing communications channels.
  • Encourage public engagement with new and more diverse audiences by placing stories in new media outlets and platforms (podcasts, etc.).
  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure alignment on strategy and messaging to support the LA Phil's values, goals and key messages.
  • Create and manage the organization's crisis communication plan.
  • Provide communications guidance for issues management related to event and audience concerns.
  • Actively monitor the media landscape and adapt communications strategies to ensure the LA Phil remains on the forefront of PR and media trends.
  • PR Management

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with press in ways that drive the LA Phil's equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Encourage press to attend and cover performances and events.
  • Oversee the scheduling, drafting and distribution of press materials including press releases, statements, talking points and FAQs.
  • Event support: Provide on-site media support and manage team coverage for concert duty, camera escort and other onsite needs.
  • Schedule and plan media events including press conferences, season launches and press tours.
  • Manage and respond to requests for general information, photos and other assistance from members of the media and public.
  • Lead team of external PR consultants and agency partners.
  • With the Communications Coordinator, maintain record of and report media coverage and clippings for key LA Phil stakeholders.
  • Facilitate media interviews for artists, musicians, and LA Phil leadership
  • Develop talking points and institutional messages to support LA Phil staff and executives for engagements with the public and press.
  • Manage PR department budget and expenses.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Job Requirements:

  • PR experience in Performing Arts or Entertainment strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 8 years' experience in Public Relations with a proven track record to create and implement complex media strategies to promote and further a global brand
  • Excellent knowledge of public relations, creating an overarching brand voice and telling the story of multiple interwoven and distinct brands
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail; proofreading and writing abilities
  • Strong leadership and the ability to inspire, manage and mentor staff
  • Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, Power Point, and familiarity with sales or fundraising software
  • Available and willing to work nights and weekends as required
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Background and interest in the performing arts desirable
  • Dedication and commitment to engage in and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the staff, vendors, and interactions with the surrounding community is a must
  • Secondary language fluency is a plus
