    The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah is seeking an Assistant Professor in the Career Line (Research Track) with demonstrated abilities in research and is interested in growing their skills for a tenure-track position.

    This position will synergize with existing strengths in precision medicine of the Lussier Research Group ).

    The Lussier Research Group conducts hypothesis-driven translational research in biomedical informatics that focuses on the use of big clinical and 'omics data, knowledge technologies, and networks to accurately personalize our understanding of the pathology, progression, and treatment for diseases.


    Candidates are expected to have a PhD from a quantitative field, such as biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, epidemiology, engineering, computational biology, applied mathematics, statistics, and applied physics.

    Candidates with a professional doctoral degree (e.g., MD, PharmD, DNP, DDS, DO) are also encouraged to apply if they have a demonstrated track record in the relevant areas and have previous training in the quantitative fields listed above (e.g., post-doctoral degree in biomedical informatics).


    Hard working, self-directed individuals with a record of achievement and commitment to excellence in research on biomedical informatics, computational biology, or bioinformatics.

    Candidates may have other additional synergistic research foci including, but not limited to, clinical informatics, informatics for personalized and precision medicine, translational bioinformatics relating data and methods into clinical domains, clinical research informatics, and the use of machine learning for predictive analytics or for patient communications.

    Major responsibilities will include contributing research to clinical data science (predictive analytics), clinical genomics, or precision medicine.

    Candidates for the position should have a research focus and will collaborate with a team of research staff members and supervise doctoral students.

    Candidates are expected to contribute to writing grant proposals as co-investigators initially or co-principal investigators after obtaining several co-investigator awards.

    We will also be supportive for the candidate to write their K-award, which can lead to their independency of research (e.g., K-awards), as well as to tenure-track positions.

    Successful candidates will enjoy a stimulating, highly collaborative, and supportive research environment across multiple health care systems.

    Depending on individual qualifications and interests, the candidate can be offered a joint or adjunct position in other departments, as well as membership(s) in Institutes and Centers.


    Indeed, the Department has a long history of collaboration that crosses the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), The Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), The Scientific Computing and Imaging Insitute (SCI), the Veterans Health Administration, Intermountain Healthcare, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, and a statewide network of Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers.

    The Department works in a rich environment that emphasizes research in life sciences, health sciences, health services research, and informatics in collaboration with colleagues in various Schools and Colleges, including Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

    The Department is a National Library of Medicine Biomedical Informatics training site.

    The University of Utah Department of Biomedical Informatics is one of the oldest informatics departments in the country, having graduated more PhDs than any other program in the world.
