The George Mason University, Special Collections Research Center is looking for a qualified and collaborative person to serve as Processing Manager.

About the Department:

The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at George Mason University Libraries is charged with acquiring, documenting, preserving, and providing access to primary research collections and documents.

SCRC manages the non-current and archival records of George Mason University and undertakes the creation of audiovisual documentary resources through its Oral History program.

SCRC also adds value to its holdings through selective digitization and through interpretive exhibits, instruction, and programming.

About the Position:

The Processing Manager is responsible for supporting the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) technical services unit, including processing, student management, closed stacks management, and assisting with preservation work within the collections.

This position works with University staff, University Libraries administration, faculty, and staff, as well as on- and off-site researchers.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or significant equivalent library experience (typically 3+ years);
Advanced knowledge of and experience with current archival resources, technologies, and metadata schema;
Ability to process multi-format collections and materials;
Ability to train and supervise student workers;
Proficiency with relevant programs (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Archivists' Toolkit, Omeka, LUNA, etc.);
Familiarity with national and international standards related to archives, preservation/conservation, and digitization;
Applicants need to be responsible, dependable, punctual, and flexible;
Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to exercise them with minimal supervision;
Excellent aptitude for accurate and detail-oriented work;
Solid organizational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgment;
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, as the position will interact with library and university staff, students, faculty, and members of the public;
Ability to take on project leadership roles in the department and to work both independently and collegially as part of a team in a fast-paced, production- and service-oriented environment;
Customer-service orientation, and ability to understand and offer advice related to coordinating work of this position with the work of other library units;
Ability to remain calm, negotiate fairly and rationally, and exercise sound just under time pressure or in emotionally-charged situations; and
Physically able to push and lift weights of up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
Specialized, in-depth experience using primary resources for research and/or work;
Specialized, in-depth experience working in a special collections/archives department in a research library;
Training in archives and preservation; and
Certified Archivist (CA) certification.
