    Default job background
    Description

    National Center for Youth Law

The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) amplifies youth power, dismantles racism and other structural inequities, and builds just policies, practices, and culture in support of young people. Our efforts advance justice through research, community collaboration, impact litigation, and policy advocacy that fundamentally transforms our nation's approach to education, health, immigration, foster care, and youth justice. Our vision is a world in which every young person thrives and has a full and fair opportunity to achieve the future they envision for themselves.

    Development Team

The Development Teams mission is to ensure that NCYL has the financial resources needed to pursue its mission and vision, and to uphold NCYLs inclusive, youth-centered, strengths-based, and equity-focused values in all fundraising efforts and activities. NCYLs Development Team is raising $20M+ annually from foundations, government agencies, corporations, law firms, and individuals. We inspire NCYL supporters and educate them about NCYLs values, impact, and work; we build community and nurture strong relationships among NCYL board members, staff, alumni, and supporters through fundraising efforts.

    Position

NCYL seeks an experienced fundraiser and grant writer to manage a portfolio of foundation and government relationships. Working in close partnership with program colleagues, executives and board members, the Development Manager will cultivate, solicit, and steward current and new foundation funders to increase financial support for NCYLs core programs and for the organization at large.

This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position. The temporary employee could be considered for a permanent role after evaluation of team needs and other conditions, including organizational funds and employee performance.

    Essential Functions

    • Manage foundation and government grant proposals by drafting narratives, coordinating budgets, editing proposals and reports, and ensuring timely submission of high-quality applications
    • Research, identify and cultivate new foundation and government funding opportunities to support NCYLs mission
    • Coordinate and track actions required to move foundation and government funding prospects through all stages of the cultivation process
    • Support Development Team efforts to uphold and integrate organizational values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all fundraising-related efforts
    • Ensure that grants, reports and other written, funder-facing materials are accurate, compelling and of the highest quality and assist in crafting new, engaging content that communicates our impact and inspires and aligns NCYL staff and funders
    • Skillfully collaborate with NCYLs Executive Director and Program Directors working across youth rights issue areas, providing them with development expertise, especially as it pertains to prospecting, funder strategy and communications, funder meeting preparations, and proposal writing
    • Become familiar with the programmatic goals and activities of NCYL.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time work experience in non-profit development or philanthropy
    • Persuasive, compelling communication skills, especially in written form
    • Exceptional attention to detail and project management skills
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
    • Experience with MS Office software suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) or similar applications
    • Experience successfully applying for and receiving significant private foundation grants
    • Familiarity with Salesforce a plus.

    Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. This position may require some travel.

    Salary, Benefits, and Location

This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position. Salary is competitive at $111,585.00 annually. A geographic salary differential may be applied if the candidate resides somewhere other than the Oakland, CA, Los Angeles, CA, New York City, or Washington, DC metro areas. This means that the salary would be reduced if the candidate resides in an area where the cost of labor is less than that of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Temporary employees are not eligible for any NCYL benefits other than those required by law. If hired permanently, NCYL provides a robust benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, generous vacation and sick benefits, flexible spending account, employer contribution to a retirement plan, and short-term and long-term disability insurance.
