The role

The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) is seeking a Business Development Manager (BDM) to join its San Francisco team.


This role will be focused on supporting the functions the Austrade San Francisco Landing Pad, which is delivered in collaboration with local partners.

The San Francisco Landing Pad forms part of a wider Austrade international Landing Pad network of specialised programs to support Australian technology companies to expand globally.


The BDM will work with Australian technology companies in the Landing Pad programs seeking to establish or grow their business in North America.

The BDM will deliver core trade services to Australian companies which may include providing advice on market entry and growth strategies, facilitating introductions to industry, customers, and partners, and providing bespoke support that results in clients achieving trade outcomes for Australia such as creating jobs, revenue growth and winning new contracts.


The BDM will be required to support critical functions of the Landing Pad, including the day-to-day design, facilitation, and operations of programming, inclusive of boot camps, demo days, and other events.

As the San Francisco Landing Pad continues to scale its offering, the BDM will have the responsibility of owning aspects of the programming as well as managing relationships with key stakeholders.

The Landing Pad sits within Austrade's wider Tech sector team.

Consequently, the BDM will be required to support Tech team members across North America and in Australia, assisting with trade clients and sector stakeholders and supporting the development and iteration of wider sector strategies.


The BDM will report to the San Francisco Post Manager and work closely with the Landing Pad Manager in San Francisco as well as colleagues based in Australia and across North America.

Due to the significant in person component required for delivery of the Landing Pad Program, applicants must be based in - or willing to be relocate to - San Francisco.


Duties include

  • Support the Landing Pad Manager in the daytoday operations of the Landing Pad, inclusive of:
  • Maintaining up to date client data on CRM systems and other administrative tasks,
  • Onboard and account manage companies throughout their time in the Landing Pad,
  • Generate online content to support Australian companies expanding into the Americas and ensuring it's updated regularly,
  • Develop new and manage existing relationships with investors, mentors, service providers and other government agencies to support the Landing Pad and its clients
  • Organise and promote events.
  • Responsible for contributing to team KPIs and meeting individual KPIs, by assisting Australian companies to achieve commercial results in the US.
  • Contribute to the delivery of tech sector objectives outlined in the Austrade Business Plan, inclusive of:
  • Working with colleagues across Austrade Americas and Australia to provide information and industry briefings to companies considering the US,
  • Providing analysis and insights on market trends and advice on regional and industry best practice and best pathways for growth for Australian companies in North America,
  • Within priority sectors identify, target and deliver information about specific, qualified, and contestable opportunities for tech exporters and investors,
  • Support Trade Directors and Trade & Investment Commissioners across North America to execute the Advanced Technology Sector Plan.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Americas and contribute to a positive working environment by living Austrade's values, Generosity of Spirit, Innovation, Transparency and Collaboration.
  • Ensure strong working relationships within Austrade, state and territory governments, and other external stakeholders, such as industry associations, venture capital firms, industry leaders and key corporates within priority sectors.
  • Maintain Austrade standards and policies, including diversity in the workplace, ethical practice and occupational health and safety principles and compliance with audit requirements.
