- Develop capital improvement project plans and specifications
- Manage the City's street reconstruction program
- Coordinate redevelopment responsibilities with City departments and private development teams
- Supervise the operational activities of the Engineering Department
- Perform advanced drafting and design using AutoCAD and Civil 3-d
- Provide technical assistance for traffic engineering studies
- Manage the municipal storm drainage system
- Review and approve permit applications
- Prepare operating and capital improvement budgets
- Offer technical assistance to contractors and the public
- Supervise assigned Engineering Technicians
- Oversee public improvement projects
- Manage public improvement inspection activities
- Supervise documentation and recordkeeping
- Review feasibility reports and execute the bid process
- Evaluate job performance and recommend personnel actions
- Encourage employee development and training opportunities
- Make public presentations at City Council meetings
- Lead public involvement processes for projects
- Represent the Engineering division to the public
- Assist in coordinating and supervising Public Works programs
- Keep management informed of significant activities and developments
- Conduct research and prepare amendments to existing procedures
- Enforce safety and environmental rules
- Attend industry-related meetings and training opportunities
- Assist in maintaining the City's benchmark system
- Answer engineering division calls and provide information
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
- Four years' experience in design and construction of municipal projects
- Professional registration in Minnesota
- Valid Driver's license
- Physical capabilities for site inspections and project management
- Experience in project development and management
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3-d
- Expertise in public and private improvements design
- Familiarity with Complete Streets design and ADA standards
- Knowledge of municipal utilities and stormwater management

Position Summary
The City of Brooklyn Center is looking for a skilled Assistant City Engineer to join our Engineering Division and play a key role in shaping the future of the city. The department is well-known for its progressive public works practices and is now focusing on areas like placemaking, community health, operational sustainability, and environmental stewardship.
In this role, you will assist in directing, planning, organizing, and supervising design and construction activities within the Engineering Division. This includes coordinating the development of construction plans and specifications, managing construction activities under the City Engineer's supervision, and overseeing staff members.
