    GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT :

    The Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) at Massachusetts General Hospital seeks a full-time Research Assistant (Clinical Research Coordinator) to join our research team.

    The successful candidate will work on multiple clinical and genomic epidemiology studies. The position entails literature review, supervised data abstraction and curation, working with large cohort studies including biobank and laboratory data, population surveys, and other publicly available data.

    The Research Assistant will work with Leland Hull, MD, MPH (DGIM, Harvard Medical School) to obtain, curate, and analyze data to understand population uptake of various genetic tests, with a focus on reproductive carrier screening.

    The candidate should be highly motivated. Ideally, the candidate will have experience with and/or a solid coursework foundation in most or all the following fields: quantitative methods, statistics, molecular biology, and epidemiological research. The responsibilities of this individual will be to collaborate with clinical investigators among all phases of the research process, from proposal development including conducting background research, to obtaining, curating, and analyzing data, to supporting manuscript preparation and submission. The position requires attention to detail and working independently to solve problems.

    We are seeking a candidate for a period of at least one year, but ideally two years. This position is ideal for a candidate interested in pursuing graduate studies in a related area (e.g., MD, PhD in computational biology, statistics, health policy, epidemiology).

    Examples of current projects include:

    • Ascertaining and analyzing laboratory and census data to understand use of carrier screening in the preconception versus prenatal periods.

    • Quantifying patient preferences for different ways to deliver carrier screening prior to pregnancy.

    • Evaluating the impact of interventions to facilitate uptake of genetic screening, such as testing for hereditary cancer syndrome predispositions, on patients, providers, and healthcare systems.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Specific duties for the Research Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Performing literature reviews of the relevant topics
    • Annotation of genetic variants (with the opportunity to learn about variant annotation from experts at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard)
    • Developing analytic datasets
    • Supporting data analysis for projects including observational and medical record-based cohorts
    • Working with investigators to develop and test hypotheses and design appropriate statistical analyses
    • Working with investigators to develop programs to enhance data quality control in active studies
    • Supporting development and generation of reports on study progress, including reports for the Principal Investigator and data and safety monitoring boards
    • Assisting in manuscript preparation and review
    • Attending team meetings
    SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

    • Attention to detail

    • Experience with data organization, manipulation, and analysis

    • Interest in learning or undergraduate coursework using statistical software applications

    • Experience with biostatistical methods, including data summaries, multiple regression modeling and diagnostics

    • Ability to work as part of a diverse team, including remote collaboration

    • Intellectual independence and initiative

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to collaborate with team members located remotely

    • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines

    • Excellent academic record

    Additional experience that is helpful but not required:
    • Previous research experience (classroom-based or professional), including investigator-initiated clinical research studies, decision science research and/or simulation tools, or qualitative research methods
    • Familiarity with statistical programming software such as SAS, Stata, Python, or R
