- In collaboration with Director of Development, supports the
Executive Officer, Chief Development Officer, and Program Division
leads in fundraising activities. Develops strategies to qualify,
cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects. - Works with the Director of Development in planning fundraising
activities to deliver against goals and objectives as needed
including strategic planning, assisting in identifying funding
sources and opportunities. - Actively manages a portfolio of prospective major donors via
face-to-face meetings as well as written and telephone contact
throughout the donor life cycle. Travels as needed for donor
meetings and events. - Proactively works with program staff on pursuing corporate and
foundation sources of support for their programs and activities.
Advises program staff on prospect identification and strategic
matching of foundations to priority programs. - Prepares annual plans including key performance indicators and
revenue targets following direction from the Director of
Development. - Conducts in-depth research. Assists program staff with
drafting and submitting correspondence, including letters of
inquiry, proposals, acknowledgement letters, and reports. - Pro-actively identifies new prospective donors to be added to
the portfolio. Communicates with members, donors, their
representatives, and others as necessary to facilitate and nurture
prospect relationships and gifts. - Participates as needed in the general activities of the
Development Office including support of other staff and special
projects as needed. - Compiles mailing lists. Updates records in Raiser's
Edge. Prepares reports for reviews and
analysis. - Leads Office of Development quality assurance efforts, ensuring
precision and attention to detail in all interactions with donors
and with program staff across the Academies. - Actively participates in building a culture of teamwork,
collaboration, creativity and high performance with employees of
the Development Office, Academy membership, Program and Executive
Office, employees of the Academies, volunteers, donors, and members
of the Academies. - Remains current and fully informed of laws, techniques, and
advancements in the fundraising profession.
Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities: Appreciation of the importance of
sciences, engineering and medicine and the mission of the
Academies. Thorough understanding of philanthropy and
professional trends. Knowledge and understanding of
sophisticated fundraising practices and essential functions of a
pro-active and innovative fundraising organization. Ability
to conceptualize, plan, and implement a programmatic approach to
building relationships and securing philanthropic support including
setting ambitious goals, developing strategies for cultivation,
solicitation, stewardship, prioritizing activities, planning and
delivering events, and orchestrating the involvement of volunteers
and organization leadership. Strong track record of securing
gifts of six and seven figures from institutional donors.
Ability to prioritize work and the flexibility to change directions
as the job dictates. Ability to solve problems and think
creatively. Ability to operate with some latitude for
independent judgment and action. Ability to work successfully
in a team environment. Experience working in complex
environments with a high degree of organizational
effectiveness. Ability to develop relationships with
co-workers, members, donors, and employees in other departments
through effective communication and interaction. Excellent
written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to
effectively interact with all levels of donors, employees, and
external constituents is essential. Proven track record with
exceptional attention to detail and planning.Minimum Education/Training Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in related field.Minimum Experience: Five years of
successful major gift fundraising or related experience. Ideal
candidate will have experience working with corporate, foundation,
and individual donors.Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at
a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to
travel.Required Licenses, Certification or
Registration: None.Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:
Reports to Director of Development. General direction is
provided.Work Environment: Office environment with
frequent travel between National Academies' facilities and to
off-site locations. Frequent travel to meet donors and external

compensation range for this position is $85,040 - $116,930.
Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the
candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience,
commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable
positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and
subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a

Description
Works with the Director of Development for assigned NationalAcademy Program Divisions, Academy senior leadership, and
Development Office colleagues to plan, implement, and coordinate
effective strategies and approaches to identify, cultivate, solicit
and close major and leadership gifts from corporations,
foundations, and individuals. Strong focus on foundation and
corporate fundraising with the ability to secure institutional
support of six and seven figures. Collaborates with the director of
development to set annual fundraising goals and executes plans.
Manages a portfolio of major gift prospects including
qualification/discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship,
via face-to-face meetings, zooms, phone calls, emails, etc. Travels
locally and nationally to visit prospects. Prepares and reviews
fundraising letters, proposals, power point presentations, and
other materials. Liaises and coordinates with Academy membership,
program, and executive offices, and development colleagues to plan
and deliver fundraising goals. Actively participates in building a
culture of philanthropy across the organization as part of a high
performing team. Works collaboratively across a decentralized
development office and with senior program colleagues across a
multi-tiered institution. High level of customer service and
ability to interact with colleagues using diplomacy and discretion
is expected.
Applies in-depth professional level knowledge and innovative
thinking to solve complex problems that impact fundraising success.
Assignments are broadly defined and require judgment and creativity
to complete. Has authority to take actions deemed advisable or
necessary, but is required to consult with supervisor and
appropriate actions are subject to organizational and departmental
policies and rules. As part of the OD team, may help establish
processes/procedures to ensure the effective and efficient
operation of the development office and function.
