    • Contribute to the creation of compelling concept papers, grant proposals, stewardship communications, and other documents that convey the impact of Urban's work.
    • Collaborate with colleagues on Urban's development team to develop and execute fundraising plans and help achieve ambitious team goals for revenue growth and funder diversification.
    • Work with senior staff to prepare for and follow up on meetings with high-capacity funders.
    • Become a trusted partner with researchers, coaching them in foundation fundraising practices and tactics and working closely with them to translate technical research ideas into fundable proposals.
    • Act as an ambassador for the Institute's research and reputation, establishing and sustaining relationships with institutional funders to advance fundraising goals.

They are ready to engage at the next level and embrace the mission and perspective of the Urban Institute.

    Background

    • A bachelor's degree and 10 years of progressive experience or in institutional fundraising work in a large, complex institution with a proven track record of success

    Experience and Skills

    • Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of securing major institutional donations, from identifying new prospects to writing convincing proposals to reporting and stewardship.
    • Proven experience in developing fundraising strategies that increase the number of foundation grants and grant revenue; experience with major foundations that fund in areas of Urban's work is preferred.
    • Experience working closely with senior leaders and program staff to develop seven-figure proposals, managing interactions with foundation staff, and providing stewardship reports.
    • Experience working with researchers to present their work to donors is preferred.
    • Ability to advance multiple projects while managing deadlines.
    • Exceptional writing skills, with substantial experience developing a range of funder communications materials.

    About Us

    Our Values

We believe in the power of evidence to improve lives and strengthen communities. Public policies work best when they are rooted in facts, and our research sparks solutions in programs and practice. Our analyses and recommendations help expand opportunities for all people, reduce hardship among the most vulnerable, and strengthen the fiscal health of governments and effectiveness of public policies.

    How We Work

We conduct sophisticated research to understand and solve real-world challenges in a rapidly urbanizing environment. Our work engages communities at multiple levels—city, state, and country—as we gather data and evaluate programs. Urban Institute scholars blend academic rigor with on-the-ground collaboration, teaming with policymakers, community leaders, practitioners, and the private sector to diagnose problems and find solutions.

Founded in 1968 to understand the problems facing America's cities and assess the programs of the War on Poverty, the Urban Institute brings decades of objective analysis and expertise to policy debates—in city halls and state houses, Congress and the White House, and emerging democracies around the world. Today, our research portfolio ranges from the social safety net to health and tax policies; the well-being of families and neighborhoods; and trends in work, earnings, and wealth building. Our scholars have a distinguished track record of turning evidence into solutions.

As an organization, the Urban Institute does not take positions on issues. Scholars are independent and empowered to share their evidence-based views and recommendations shaped by research.

Our work environment encourages intellectual honesty, innovation, diversity, and mutual respect. Our analysis elevates debate, wherever it takes place.
