    Purpose

    Responsible for the operations of all the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering teaching laboratories each semester. Responsible for supporting multiple different departmental research laboratories by triaging the testing, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of equipment and related work as required.

    Responsibilities

    Teaching Lab Coordination

  • Work closely with the course instructors and teaching assistants supporting each teaching lab every fall and spring semesters, and summer sessions.
  • Fabricate test setups and assist in the implementation of test procedures for each teaching lab. As necessary, coordinate with the machine shop on the production of these set-ups.
  • Maintain an inventory of lab equipment and consumables required for each teaching lab.
  • Work with graduate teaching assistants, students, and professors on teaching lab needs, including preparing lab equipment set-up and specimens and hands on assisting in the student Machine Shop.
  • Trouble-shoot, repair, and maintain the teaching lab equipment to preserve specialized equipment.
  • Supervise lab safety and cleanliness for each teaching lab in cooperation with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to oversee the use and safe disposal of hazardous materials for each lab.
  • Purchase all materials necessary for each teaching lab.
  • Assist in developing annual budget requests for equipment and supplies for each teaching lab.
  • May work with undergraduate design courses and student organizations on project needs, including soldering, item creation, design, etc.
  • Research Technical Support

  • Serves as contact for general departmental research laboratory repairs for those who have their research grants through the department.
  • Triage the testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of specialized equipment relating to a departmental scientific or research activity.
  • Responsible for supervising skilled and semi-skilled workers and personally participate in technical work of a highly specialized or non-standard nature.
  • Maintain detailed gas cylinder inventory in accordance with university lab safety and operational protocols.
  • Responsible for overseeing compliancy on gas cylinder. Including advising and guiding of gas cylinder transportation, storage, returns, monitoring, and safe handling.
  • Serve on the ETC safety committee and the building emergency response team.
  • Assist with surplus coordination.
  • Assist with ETCBM email ticket system to submit service request for incident reports.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

  • Required Qualifications

  • Technical or Vocational School: Related field (Required).
  • Familiar with proper laboratory safety and housekeeping practices.
  • Willingness to work under challenging circumstances and time constraints, with the ability to prioritize tasks based on importance and availability.
  • Communication skills, verbal and written, are a priority.
  • Must display ability to successfully and satisfactorily complete assigned tasks.
  • Should exhibit characteristics of an effective team member focused on a common goal, promotes the development of like qualities in others.
  • Should possess initiative to take effective action, anticipate needs and perform in accordance with resources provided.
  • Must be willing and able to expand the scope of responsibilities as dependent upon requirements of the business environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with repair and maintenance of all electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with electronic product assembly, prototype work and handling sensitive material.
  • Hands-on and fluent with lab equipment: acoustic meters, digital multimeter, spectrum analyzer, signal generator, oscilloscope, camera/display equipment, power supply, etc.
  • Salary Range

    $55,000+ depending on qualifications

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Job requires sitting, standing, and bending on a daily basis.
