Job Description Capitol Technology is a small, private, non-profit, university in South Laurel, Maryland with approximately 800 students and a dedicated full-time staff of 75.POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Dean of Students, the Director of Career Development and Employer Relations is responsible
for developing, implementing, and assessing programs which support the student and employer experience including:
career exploration, search process for internships and first destination employment, career development, maintaining
employer relations, supporting employer contact with students. Additionally, this position will be expanded to include
workshops for alumni to assist in mid-career transition; executive preparation; and other areas. The individual will
collaborate across divisions to support integration of career related learning goals into the curriculum and co-curricular
experiences and to both broaden and deepen connections with employers or workforce development organizations in
support of university wide goals and the institutional mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design, deliver, and assess career-related programming both on ground and virtual including: Fall and Spring
Career Conferences with Job Fairs, plan Charge Ahead workshop series, provide programs to support successful
pursuit of sponsored opportunities for scholarship and work experience, and manage career mentoring programs.
• Provide direct advice and guidance to students in a variety of degree programs via, phone, email, and web based
communications both in real time and with asynchronous resources related to clarifying personal and career goals
with emphasis on career development (mock interviews, resume, cover letter), job search strategies, and
professional networking
• Supervise the operational aspects of the job postings including Simplicity and Student Game Plan.
• Implement an employer relations plan including: regular contact, supporting job fairs, identifying opportunities for
student engagement via internship or employment, supporting employers' job postings
• Maintain Career Services presence online including collaborating with Marketing and Communications to increase
Linkedin Presence, MyCapitol, as well as, co-branded web-based vendors.
• Collaborating with the alumni and development teams to engage alumni with the university in areas of interest to
them and to facilitate collaboration with employers for grant writing and resource development
• Gather, maintain, and analyze information and data to assess career development programs.
• Implement and track the Capitol Commitment to serve students at graduation, 90 day, and 6 month milestones, as
well as, provide first destination data to meet reporting expectations
• Identify and develop programs to support a growing remote graduate student population in pursuit of their career
goals, as well as, supporting traditional undergraduates.
• Create student career curriculum based on the student roadmap
• Identify and engage with key stakeholders within target companies to understand their hiring needs and
preferences
• Collaborate with academic departments to align curriculum with industry trends and employer requirements
• Organize and host employer events including networking receptions, and employer information sessions
• Track and report on key metrics related to employer engagement and student outcomes
• Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices in employer relations and career services
• Represent the institution at external conferences, meetings, and events related to employer relations and career
services
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for events and travel
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred;
• 1 to 3years experience within a Career Services office and a demonstrated knowledge of career development
theories and practices required; 3 to 5 years' experience preferred.
• 3+ years administrative and experience required;
• 1 to 3 years event planning experience required;
• 1 to 3 years in an advising, counseling or coaching role, including graduate assistantships;
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally to a student population;
• Demonstrated knowledge of methods and strategies for seeking professional employment;
• Demonstrated knowledge of resume and cover letter formats, preferably for technical fields;
• Strong writing, proof reading and editing skills;
• Ability to prioritize work, organize materials and tasks and meet deadlines;
• Must have a strong knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and ability to both learn and effectively operate the
Jenzabar database;
• Must be able to maintain confidential information;
• Must be able to adapt, learn new tasks/duties/assignments and be flexible;
• Possess strong problem-solving skills in addition to detail focus
• Familiarity with student information systems, career services management platforms, and other relevant
technology tools
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs. Ability to push, pull, lift, carry, or maneuver
weights up to twenty-five (25) pounds independently or with assistance. Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods.
Requires repetitive motions for operating computer mouse and keyboard. Requires ability to effectively communicate on
the telephone. Requires use of computer monitor and ability to comprehend written materials.
