    Executive Director

    Job Description

    Senior and Disability Action (SDA) is seeking an Executive Director to lead SDA into its next chapter SDA isa nonprofit grassroots advocacy organization that organizes, mobilizes, and educates seniors and people with disabilities, with a main focus on San Francisco. Our next Executive Director will continue to build the senior and disability movement by supporting staff and members; strengthen relationships with coalition partners, elected officials, and government staff; maintain a strong funding base and oversee financial management; continue to grow the organization; and use a collaborative process to build a vision for the organization and the movement.

    The Executive Director should:

    ● Share a commitment to community organizing as a core strategy for building power among senior and disability communities;

    ● Possess a strong political analysis, including a grasp of the intersections of disability justice, senior, economic, and racial justice;

    ● Be ready to adopt SDA's collaborative culture, where everyone's leadership is embraced;

    By joining Senior and Disability Action, you will join an exciting and dynamic organization with a talented staff of 10 people with a leadership team with over 15 years of experience in organizing and campaigns. The organization has an active membership base who are the driving force of our campaigns. The organization has a healthy budget of just over $1 Million. More than half of our funding comes from local government contracts. SDA currently has staff and member-led programs in affordable housing, healthcare, transit justice, pandemic safety, service navigation and organizing education. The workers are members of OPEIU Local 29 and now use the innovative affinity bargaining process to negotiate their contract.

    JOB DETAILS

    Start date: Summer 2024

    Hours: Full time, exempt

    Salary: $120,000 - $135,000 + benefits

    Benefits: Benefits include fully paid health care premiums, chiropractic and acupuncture, sick time, vacation time, retirement benefits, voluntary commuter check contributions, and sabbaticals after intervals of 4 years and 7 years

    Work environment: Hybrid, with consistent presence in the community and in the office (222 8th Street, San Francisco)

    Direct reports: 4 FTE's: Director of Housing and Transit Organizing, Director of Emergent Campaigns, Director of Organizing and Partnerships, Administrative Coordinator

    Location: Must live in the Bay Area or move within 3 months

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Finance and Fund Development

    1. Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work, research and apply for grants and implement other fund development strategies including an annual appeal, donor event, and ongoing donor cultivation.

    2. Maintain sound financial and administrative practices, ensuring seamless practices and compliance.

    3. Work with the staff and the board to monitor cash flow and expenses and prepare an annual budget. Provide quarterly financial statements and ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

    4. Steward local government contracts and ensure ongoing communication with City staff. Fulfill compliance requirements for those contracts and handle audits.

    5. Maintain on-going relationship with and reporting to private funders.

    Organizational Development, Program Development and Administration

    1. Work with staff and members to collaboratively develop programs, work with Board and staff to develop strategic direction around organizational and financial plans, and carry out plans and policies.

    2. Work with staff and members to develop strategy to win campaigns.

    3. Promote active and broad participation by members in the organization's work.

    4. Develop and ensure appropriate financial and budget training for staff and financial management and fiduciary responsibility training for the board.

    5. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

    6. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.

    Communications

    1. See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.

    2. Working closely with SDA's Digital Outreach Specialist, ensure that SDA has a strategy for communicating to our community and the public the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.

    3. Make sure that staff are creating sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.

    4. Participate in representing the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, the media and the general public.

    Staff and Board Relations

    1. Create and foster a workplace culture grounded in member experiences that is creative and collaborative where employees' voices are heard and considered. Lead a growth-oriented culture that is supportive and creates opportunities for professional development at all levels.

    2. Work with staff who supervise and be ultimately responsible for the recruitment, employment, and termination of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.

    3. Supervise three Leadership Team members, the Administrative Coordinator and the contract bookkeeper as well as other consultants as appropriate.

    4. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations are held, and sound human resource practices are in place.

    5. Work with and develop the skills and the role of the Leadership Team.

    6. Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.

    7. Maintain a climate which attracts, retains and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.

    8. Supports board relations, assists board leadership in identifying board member candidates, coordinating productive meeting agendas with the Board, and maintain appropriate records.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience

    ● Demonstrated commitment to disability justice, senior justice, racial justice, economic justice, and SDA's mission and values.

    ● Personal and/or work experience in the disability and/or senior communities.

    ● 5 years of fiscal management experience developing budgets, developing and tracking expenses, and understanding generally accepted financial practices as well as compliance.

    ● 5+ years of management experience (e.g. staff supervision experience, particularly building and developing teams and collaborative problem solving).

    ● 5+ years of experience with grassroots community organizing or labor organizing.

    ● 5+ years of experience working on policy advocacy, legislation, and coalition-building.

    ● Understanding of HR practices and employment law.

    ● Experience working with government contracts.

    ● 3+ years of experience developing organizational strategy and management.

    ● Commitment to being scent-free, supporting an accessible environment, and following SDA's COVID safety policy (including masking in the office and at events, testing, etc.).

    ● Excellent interpersonal skills.

    ● Professional written and verbal communications skills.

    ● Knowledgeable with Google Suite and Microsoft Excel.

    ● Live in the Bay Area. The position requires meeting with community members and partners and working with SDA staff in the office.
