    CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION

    The Maine Department of Corrections is seeking a dynamic individual to provide leadership as the Superintendent at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine.

    The Superintendent at Long Creek leads by example in fostering an environment of collaboration, trust and respect in keeping with the Maine Model of Corrections:Making our communities safer by reducing harm through supportive intervention, empowering change, and restoring lives.


    JOB DESCRIPTION
    The Superintendent is responsible for directing and overseeing the operations of Long Creek Youth Development Center.

    Responsibilities range from the integration of Unit Management concepts and Prisoner Treatment Programs to the overall security and maintenance of the physical plant within National Standards (American Correctional Association) and PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act).

    Teamwork, professionalism, and integrity are the foundation of the guiding principles of the Maine Department of Corrections and provide the path to achieving our primary mission of protecting the public by providing a safe, secure and humane correctional environment for staff and the juvenile residents of the facility.

    The Superintendent will allocate budget resources for the maximum possible effect and will develop, implement and establish the policies and procedures for correctional staff ensuring the overall safety and security of the facility.

    THE BACKGROUND OF WELL QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE :


    • E xperience managing a secure residential setting that demonstrates philosophical alignment with the Maine Model of Corrections.
    • A n energetic, engaged leadership style including working knowledge of ICS, use of force, and security principles.
    • Forward thinking leadership skills with experience working with justice involved youth, juvenilet correctional programming, etc.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in systems thinking and establishing policies, practices, procedures and training to support efficient and effective correctional practices and programs.
    • Experience in the management of diverse staff, including demonstrated experience or oversight of staff disciplinary process, progressive discipline, staff wellness and peer support, and human resources.
    • Knowledge of or experience in the Government sector and/or experience working with collective bargaining agreements and union relations.
    • Comfort with working collaboratively with the MDOC team in a high visibility role within the MDOC.
    • Knowledge of National Correctional Standards.
    • Knowledge of Correctional facility security and safety systems and communications.
    • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing fiscal matters.
    • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in corrections.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    A combination of education (including Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Business Administration, and Public Administration or related fields), training, and progressively responsible experience in managing programs and people, with substantial experience in an advanced administrative capacity.

    Experience may be substituted on a year for year basis with education.

    • A demonstrated track-record of successfully implementing and refining a leadership development strategy
    • Coaching, motivating and developing senior leaders to be great developers of others.
    • Significant time spent leading change, building programs, and operating at a strategic level
    • Proven credibility to influence at the executive level and to work collaboratively within multiple organizational levels.
