    Job Details

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

Akouos, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company, is building a leading gene therapy company focused on hearing disorders. We are a precision genetic medicine company focused on developing gene therapies with the potential to restore, improve, and preserve high-acuity physiologic hearing for individuals who live with disabling hearing loss worldwide.

Restoring, improving, and preserving high-acuity hearing is an area of high unmet need in medicine: 466 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss, and there are no FDA-approved pharmacologic therapies to address its underlying causes.

Akouos was founded in 2016 by leaders in the fields of neurotology, genetics, inner ear drug delivery, and AAV gene therapy. Listening is in our DNA. We believe the only way to achieve our ambitious goals is to engage as one team, listen to each other, and trust in ourselves and our science.

The Early Preclinical Development (EPD) Team is seeking an Associate Scientist with experience in inner ear histology to support discovery and IND-enabling animal studies. The ideal candidate will have experience in histologic techniques specific to the inner ear, such as microdissection of the mouse and non-human primate (NHP) inner ear tissues into discrete anatomical regions, and further processing of these tissues using various histologic techniques, in addition to imaging, analysis, and preparation of data for presentation. Cross-functional work may be required to advance Company goals. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and creative, with a desire to succeed at the highest level in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.

    Job Responsibilities:
    • Perform mouse and NHP inner ear microdissections
    • Perform NHP temporal bone extraction and processing
    • Prepare inner ear tissues for embedding and preparation for frozen sections
    • Preparation of inner ear tissues for molecular analyses
    • Perform immunohistochemistry
    • Perform epifluorescent imaging, cochlear frequency mapping, and confocal microscopy
    • Produce graphs and charts from histologic data
    • Preparation of histologic images for presentation
    • Development and/or review of immunohistochemistry protocols
    • Inventory ordering and database management
    • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and external groups to coordinate and drive complex studies
    • Weekend work may be required at times
    Basic Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree with 0+ years of experience, or high school diploma and 2+ years of hands-on experience with inner ear biology.
    Additional Skills and Preferences:
    • Experience in solving scientific problems and/or image analysis using programming languages
    • Experience and programming skills in at least one language such as Python or MATLAB
    • Knowledge of cochlear anatomy, cochlear microdissection (whole-mount and sections), and methods for histological preparation of inner ear tissues required
    • Experience with modern imaging techniques; epifluorescent and confocal microscopy required
    • Excellent computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Suite)
    • Experience with image analysis software (ImageJ, Amira, LasX, Imaris); may include coding
    • Excellent laboratory technical lab skills (pipetting, reagent preparation, liquid handling)
