- Specimen procurement and processing
- Interact with patients to obtain consents for tumor banking purposes
- Coordinate with surgery schedulers and nurses in Clinic to identify potential patients for blood and tissue procurement

Job Description Summary
The Pancreatic Cancer Research Center is looking for a Research Specialist A (RSA) to join our team.
The RSA is responsible for the entire life cycle of the specimens, starting from identifying potential patients, procurement in cooperation with HUP and other surgical teams, to aseptic processing, through banking and inventory management, to retrieval and disbursement.
Essential daily routines also require the Research Specialist to spend time in various clinical spaces to interact with new and returning patients and obtain consent for tumor banking purposes and Rapid Autopsy Program purposes as well.
The Research Specialist is an integral player of the Rapid Autopsy Program by being the center of coordination and execution for all these moving parts and will play a pivotal role in successful development and establishment of a Rapid Autopsy Program in the PCRC, as well as supporting an organoid collection program and other clinical/translational research needs.
Job DescriptionThe Research Specialist A (RSA) is a position within the Pancreatic Cancer Research Center (PCRC) and reports to Drs. Ben Stanger and Kim Reiss.
The RSA is responsible for the entire life cycle of the specimens, starting from identifying and consenting potential patients, maintaining various REDCap databases, procurement in cooperation with HUP, PAH, and CCH surgical teams, to aseptic processing, through banking and inventory management, to retrieval and disbursement.
Essential daily routines also require the RSA to spend time in Pancreatic Oncology clinic to interact with new and returning patients and obtain consent for tumor banking purposes and Rapid Autopsy Program purposes as well.
Close communication and coordination with the clinicians, surgery schedulers, and the Specialist will be the key to perform this responsibility.
The Specialist maintains meticulous auditable records, in a HIPAA compliant manner, of all specimens collected so they can be linked back to the original donor or de-identified as appropriate.
The Specialist aids in regulatory compliance by tracking informed consents and by writing and revising SOPs. Specimens include but are not limited to blood, various fluids samples, and solid tumor tissues.The position includes wet bench laboratory work including assistance with the generation of patient derived organoids (PDOs) in a sterile tissue culture environment.
Processing skills include dissection, tissue sampling and preparation, blood handling and gradient purification, and advanced cell culture techniques for working with primary cells.
The Specialist is responsible for monitoring and maintaining all laboratory equipment. The position also includes assisting clinical research efforts, under the supervision of Dr.Reiss, with duties including coordination of Point of Care testing of pancreatic cancer patients, database management, data analysis, preparation of protocols and amendments for the IRB.
The Specialist liaises with cooperative entities including clinicians, the clinical and translational research teams, and the staff at facilities such as TTAB and Pathology.
Our newest endeavor in the PCRC is the Rapid Autopsy Program.RAP has many moving parts and requires coordination between the patient and their care team, the anatomic pathology department, the research team, and any necessary transportation.
The Specialist is an integral player by being the center of coordination and execution for all these moving parts and will play a pivotal role in successful development and establishment of a new Rapid Autopsy Program in the PCRC.
Must be able to work after hours and weekends in case of rapid autopsy collection and tumor processing from late surgeries on weekdays.
