    About the Job


    The Polar Geospatial Center (PGC) is looking for a graduate student in GIS or a related field to fulfill a wide range of duties.

    The position duties include but are not limited to:

    * (60%) Assisting polar researchers from other institutions in obtaining and manipulating imagery
    * (15%) Manipulating and editing geographic datasets
    * (10%) Creating custom map products
    * (10%) Managing long-term mapping, and data storage projects with undergraduate student assistants
    * (5%) Opportunities to attend and participate in conferences, workshops, and training courses

    Specific skills and workflows will be taught on the job. Work at the Polar Geospatial Center is fast-paced and evolving with industry trends and user community feedback. The ideal candidate will bring initiative to explore new ideas with teammates, and resourcefulness to implement them.


    Position schedule:
    This is a 50-100% 2024 Summer Term and 50% Academic Year Appointment.

    This assistantship is renewable for up to 1 year, subject to satisfactory academic progress towards your degree (including registration requirements), your satisfactory performance of assistantship duties, and of departmental funding in future semesters.

    This position is eligible for graduate assistant tuition benefits during the academic year (excluding summer). Should this position start in Spring 2024, it would be eligible for prorated benefits.

    Graduate students do not receive paid vacation.

    The current hourly rate for this position is $27.07.


    The PGC provides geospatial support, mapping, and GIS/remote sensing solutions to researchers and logistics teams in the polar science community.

    We collaborate with scientists to complete their research goals in a safe, timely, and efficient manner by providing a service which most groups do not have the resources or expertise to complete.

    Our goal is to introduce new, state-of-the-art techniques from the geospatial field to effectively solve problems in the least mapped places on Earth.

    Qualifications


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Current University of Minnesota Graduate Student in GIS or related field
    • Strong problem-solving skills
    • High attention to detail and ability to learn quickly
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once
    • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and a strong commitment to provide superior support to the polar science community
    • Ability to work independently as well as with others

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Focus in Remote Sensing, Cartography, Imagery Analysis, or Computer Science
    • Previous GIS job experience and/or study
    • Interest in Polar Science initiatives and collaborations
    • Ability to work full-time over the summer
    • Customer Service experience

    The Polar Geospatial Center (PGC) is a part of the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences in the College of Science & Engineering.

    PGC provides geospatial support, mapping, and GIS/remote sensing solutions to researchers and logistics teams in the polar science community and worldwide.
