    Description

    The Well Being area of Hennepin County's Human Services and Public Health Department (HSPH) department is seeking a Master of Social Work Intern for the Connect for School Success program. Connect for School Success is a voluntary, strengths-based, parent-driven program to support families in identified schools whose children have multiple unexcused absences and/or significant barriers to school attendance and engagement. The majority of the students in our partner schools identify as Black, Indigenous, People of color (BIPOC). The program is designed to address barriers to attendance, help families become more stable, improve student attendance, and build relationships between families, school, and community. The program will provide interventions based on needs the family identifies and focuses on the educational success of students facing barriers to school engagement through a holistic, supportive, and strengths-based approach.

    Location and hours:
    This position is hybrid and will be performed on-site at various satellite offices throughout Hennepin County and remote as job duties require. The intern is scheduled to work a flexible work shift Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that could include occasional evenings and weekends as determined by interns and field instructors.

    This internship is intended to begin August or September 2024 and go through the entirety of the academic school year or until April/May 2025 when hours placement hours are completed as determined by interns and field instructors. Interns will work part-time at approximately 20 hours a week to meet minimum requirements as determined by their university and program.

    While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

    The MSW Intern, in partnership with a Connect for School Success Senior Social Worker, will:
    • Provide proactive outreach to engage families referred to the program.
    • Conduct home visits and work in the field (including attending schools and /or community-based meetings).
    • Work with families to develop a case plan that is parent/caregiver driven; referring families to appropriate ongoing services which includes active communication and collaboration with these service providers.
    • Actively partner with schools to seamlessly support families.
    • Advocate for parents when the connection to schools is strained or absent.
    • Utilize a family driven, strengths-based approach engaging families.
    • Continually focus on building trusting relationship with families and active engagement throughout the duration of the case.
    • Maintain timely and thorough documentation as per program standards. This includes documentation for Child Welfare Targeted Case Management revenue if/when applicable.
    Need to have:
    • Must be enrolled in one of the following as for the fall academic school year of :
      • Current enrollment in a master's degree program in social work from an accredited university and program
    • Access to reliable internet connection and self-supported hybrid office space.
    • Access to reliable transportation.
    • Valid driver's license.
