    Asian Americans for Equality is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization based in New York City. Founded in 1974 in Manhattan's Chinatown to advocate for equal rights, AAFE has transformed in the past four decades to become one of the city's leading housing, social service and community development organizations. AAFE advances racial, social and economic justice for Asian Americans and other systematically disadvantaged communities, guided by our experiences as Asian Americans and our commitment to civil rights. AAFE is nationally recognized as an innovative affordable housing developer and property manager; we have created and preserved more than 1,000 affordable rental units in Manhattan and Queens and provided over $400 million in mortgage financing for first-time homebuyers. Through our affiliate, Renaissance Economic Development Corporation, AAFE supports immigrant entrepreneurs, offering low-interest loans and training programs. From neighborhood offices in Chinatown and the Lower East Side (Manhattan) and Flushing and Jackson Heights (Queens) we provide an array of multilingual counseling and educational programs in support of low-income tenants, seniors and immigrant youth. AAFE strives for a more equitable city, through research, advocacy and grassroots community organizing.

    Position Summary:

    The Staff Generalist serves AAFE's mission to empower immigrant communities by providing support to office operations, direct client services, homelessness prevention and community outreach in Manhattan Lower East Side. The full-time Staff Generalist also supports areas where there may be an increased service demand or during staff leaves of absence. This position may include a variety of short term projects and collaboration with internal volunteers, interns and external community based partnerships.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide front desk coverage to direct office traffic and phone inquiries
    • Provide one-on-one counseling, advocacy, and follow-up services for clients with healthcare and social service and housing issues.
    • Develop a service plan that prioritizes client's needs and services to resolve presenting issues.
    • Advocate on behalf of clients to resolve issues related to healthcare, medical billing, and government benefits.
    • Provide support in case note writing, data entry, and client file maintenance
    • Maintain and update both client files and digital records in the funder database system and/or internal database accurately and timely as required.
    • Assist Program Managers and Program Directors in preparing regular reports to funders.
    • Provide interpretation for clients and counselors as needed
    • Assist in community outreach, tenant organizing and mutual aid activities
    • Assist in community workshops, tenant association meetings, and tenant leadership training. Duties include but are not limited to material preparation, client invitation, event logistical support and post-event follow up
    • Represent AAFE by participating in community events and promote AAFE services
    • Assist in general administrative duties
    • Participate in department and staff meetings and training
    • Share light chores to maintain the optimize organization and neatness in the office
    • Other responsibilities as assigned

    Working Conditions:

    This is a full-time position. The position is based in AAFE Manhattan Lower East Side and includes possible short term projects at our other offices or offsite. Weekend and late-night hours are required for community outreach and professional training occasionally.

    Qualifications:

    • Bilingual/Fluent in English/Chinese
    • Bachelor's degree or any combination of High School degree or equivalent with any experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the job responsibilities.
    • 2 years of experience in community outreach and counseling.
    • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated attention to detail and focus.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite and social media platforms
    • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to present information to a diverse client base- specifically racially, ethnically and socially diverse.
    • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and information

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor's degree or any combination of High School degree or equivalent with any experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the job responsibilities.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The position requires sitting, standing, walking (both inside and outside of the office) and occasional lifting and carrying of approximately 30 pounds (event materials and/or office supplies).
