- Develop a working relationship with direct school staff (teachers, deans, principals)
- Communicate and develop working relationships with area school staff (teachers, deans, principals) in order to provide support for students at CASA and Step Up.
- Obtain, exchange, and interpret student academic records and data
- Work through procedures/policies at local district level in order to obtain, exchange and interpret student records.
- Understand foundational math skills
- Be fluent in the math skills of the Michigan Core Curriculum in order to support students and staff.
- Utilize student data and records to develop practical tools for tutors (coaches) to use with students to help with homework and growing basic academic skills (including teaching students organizational and homework-completion skills)
- Work hands-on with CASA and Step Up students to target specific learning gaps and teach academic skills and concepts
- Use personal creativity to make use of CASA & Step Up's current tools (flashcards, educational games, etc)
- Provide strategies and sample lessons that utilize the CASA and Step Up tools (i.e. flashcards, games.)
- Develop specific academic material for our bottom 10% of students and work directly with these students and their tutors (coaches) to accelerate their learning and understanding of basic skills
- Develop specific strategy lessons for the lowest 10% of students at CASA and Step Up.
- Be comfortable teaching the lessons to students and staff in order to increase learning outcomes for students.
- College degree (BA in companion areas) and valid teaching certification (or within 2 months of final certification),
- Demonstrate successful classroom experience teaching ethnically and economically diverse populations of elementary and/or middle school students,
- Ability to drive a Hope College vehicle (includes holding a valid U. S. driver's license for two or more years).
- Self-starter and self-directed individual,
- Available for after school hours and summer,
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with all constituents, including middle-school and elementary-school youth,
- Demonstrated understanding of and experience with diverse populations,
- Spanish conversational preferred,
- Strong organizational and writing skills,
- Pluses: ESL endorsement; Special education certification; experience in implementing systems that support students' social and emotional development ( SEL ),
- Allegiance and understanding of the Step Up , Upward Bound , CASA , and Hope College missions.
