    Job Overview

    Each Herron Preparatory Academy's (HPA's) staff member is responsible for advancing HPA's mission and embodying our core values by ensuring all scholars access quality classical education that leads to systematic academic achievement and strong character development. The person in this role builds relationships based in trust and respect with scholars, families, and HPA staff members; directly leads our scholars' learning by setting clear, high standards for scholars' academic and behavioral expectations; planning lessons that engage scholars' curiosity and interest; evaluates effectiveness and adjusts instructional strategies based on scholars' performance, and models the HPA Habits we strive to instill in all of our scholars. Taken together, our classroom teachers are integral to ensuring scholars rapidly progress toward, and ultimately attain, mastery of grade-level academic standards and exceed our behavioral expectations.

    The Dean of Students at Herron Preparatory Academy (HPA) promotes and supports an effective learning environment by providing overall leadership to the student management function. The Dean of Students reports to the Assistant Head of School (AHOS) and works under the direction of the Director of Student Culture (DSC).

    Specific objectives and responsibilities of the position include:

    Student Culture
    • Exemplifies HPA Habits by modeling student culture & professional conduct throughout the school.
    • Supports the DSC implement in- and out-of-school student life activities (e.g. positive reward events) and events (e.g., student showcase).
    • Actively promotes and reinforces HPA's house structure into student life events.
    • Maintains key staff and community partner relationships.
    • Administers the student conduct code and Universal Behavior Policies (UBPs) and supports faculty to ensure compliance with UBP.
    • Leads student resets and restorative actions in response to student conduct requests.
    • Counsels students to acknowledge and manage responsible personal conduct. Helps resolve problems that impede student learning and/or participation in school activities.
    • Communicate student consequences to students and families.
    • Executes established protocol for notifying parents of continued misconduct issues and concerns.
    • Investigates student attendance and conducts assigned actions to address concerns. Helps parents and students understand attendance and behavioral requirements.
    • Implements proactive strategies to address emerging negative behavioral patterns.
    • Follow IDOE requirements for notifying parents of their legal responsibilities as they relate to student attendance.
    • At the request of DCS, works collaboratively with faculty to develop systems for behavioral interventions that contribute to a productive, academic environment.
    • Works collaboratively with the AHOS, DCS, or School Counselor to investigate hardship, neglect, and suspected child abuse cases. Initiates referrals to community resources (e.g., court systems, law enforcement, health care facilities, child welfare services, etc.).
    • Responds to emergency calls for the purpose of notifying appropriate parties to address immediate safety issues.
    • Helps supervise student activities as directed (e.g., arrivals/departures, parking lots, lunch periods, hall duty, extracurricular programs, etc.).
    • Participates in MTSS meetings, parent conferences, and IEP meetings as requested.
    • Participates in disciplinary hearings with students and parents to identify barriers to success and resources to address barriers.
    Summer Academy
    • Serve as a member of the Summer Academy team.
    • Supports the student conduct code during Summer Academy and supervises students as requested.
    Leadership
    • Supervises and attends extracurricular events as requested.
    • Supports and encourages students and parents while respecting and maintaining confidentiality.
    • Attendance at scheduled faculty meetings, professional development meetings, and other sessions as determined by the Head of School, AHOS, or DCS.
    • Attendance at evening events that include but may not be limited to Parent Orientation, Meet the Teacher Night, Parent/Teacher Conferences, and Open Houses. The dates of these events are listed on the Annual Master Calendar or are communicated in advance.
    • An expectation of professional and ethical conduct and professional growth throughout the year.
    • Collaboratively works with the administration and others to support the policies, guidelines, and working procedures for HPA.
    • Performs other duties as determined necessary by the Head of School or Assistant Head of School.
    • An assignment of 260 days with vacation as approved by the Head of School.
    Qualifications
    • 5 to 7 years teaching experience required, preferably in a culturally diverse school.
    • Experience leading groups and working in teams to achieve academic and cultural success.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities.
    • Ability to work in a team environment.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
    • Bachelors' Degree required, Masters' Degree preferred.
    Compensation

    Negotiable depending on experience. Full-time benefits include health, dental, vision & life insurance; health savings account contributions, short-term & long-term disability, retirement contributions, paid vacation & sick days.
