How to Set Goals Stress Free

Davia Ward

Concrete goals are important. They help provide your life with structure as you determine how you’ll measure your most important accomplishments. Goals, however, can be a major source of stress for some people. Although they are often necessary, goals should not cause any anxiety! If you struggle to set goals that are stress-free, the following steps will help you start.

Remember the Point

Remember that the point of setting goals is to add to your personal well-being and happiness. They should build resilience and leave you feeling fulfilled. Because of this, you shouldn’t only set goals to alleviate or reduce stress. Don’t focus on stress management. Instead, focus on creating goals that will help you feel happier and more accomplished.

Start Small

Don’t start by setting a long list of goals that you want to accomplish. This can be overwhelming, which may cause you to give up once you realize you can’t do everything. Instead, just pick one or two to start with. Focus on taking small steps. These steps will add up. Soon you’ll be heading in the right direction!

Take Active Steps to Maintain Your Goals

Setting goals is useless unless you take active steps to maintain and accomplish them. Remember that although long term goals are more challenging, they will also be more rewarding in the end. To help encourage yourself, consider implementing a small reward into the process. This will help divide your goals into more manageable sections and keep you motivated. You should also not be discouraged if you accidentally slip up. Remember, minor setbacks are just part of the journey.

Record Your Journey

Take extra time to record your process. Write your goals down! This will give you something tangible to look at so you stay on track. Another great way to stay motivated is to keep a journal of what steps you’ve taken each day or week. Even if you feel like you’re not making any progress, you’ll be able to look back on your writing and realize all that you’ve accomplished.

If setting goals causes you stress, it’s time to start using a different method. Remember the point of creating goals! They shouldn’t cause you any stress, but should instead encourage and motivate you. Goals are a helpful tool. Start small and take active steps to accomplish your goals.
