Job Overview

Reporting to the Director of the Campus Police Department/designee, the Sergeant works independently with limited supervision, collaborating with other Patrol Sergeants and serving as a frontline supervisor for subordinate officers and civilians (student guards and contact security guards)


The Sergeant oversees day-today operations/activities and supervises patrol officers assigned to provide police, safety and physical security services to the Georgetown University Law Center and the community in general.

They ensure compliance with appropriate written and verbal orders of the Director/designee for all security, police, and safety and traffic matters occurring on and around Law Center property; direct and deploy the work activities of subordinate employees assigned; consult with the Director/designee on appropriate personnel decisions; serve as initial Incident Commander on-scene during incidents and emergencies unless relieved by a ranking officer; and send emergency notifications to the University Community during critical events as approved by Director/designee.


The duties of the Sergeant are critical to emergency management and law enforcement operations as errors can lead to the loss of life and loss of property; as well, effective public safety at the University has a positive impact on the reputation of the University.

Work Interactions

The Sergeant is an integral part of Georgetown Law's Campus Police Department.

As a visible representative of public safety, they reflect positively or negatively on the department and/or the University; and as a liaison to internal constituencies (students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, visitors, neighbors) and external agencies (MPD, DCFD,FBI, USSS), they routinely interact in a professional manner.

As well, in a structured/formal or unstructured/emergency setting (for example non-routine contacts, contacts as part of a presentation, and/or contacts with violators/victims), they convey information in a clear, concise, and logical manner.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher teaming
  • At least 5 years of law enforcement experience related to public safety, security, law enforcement, military and/or equivalent supervisory experience with knowledge of criminal/civil law and police policies and procedures including 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Special Police Officer Commission, to obtain any other securityrelated clearances, and to pass a detailed postoffer background investigation
  • Successful completion of all other departmental trainings, to include Crisis De-Escalation TraintheTrainer or equivalent, Field Training & Evaluation Program or equivalent, Basic Instructor Training Program or equivalent, First line Supervisor Training or equivalent, and Instructor and Lesson Plan Development Training Program or equivalent
  • Excellent grammar, speaking, and writing skills (completion of a written test and/or a writing sample, if required by the Director)
  • Possession of tact, patience, a courteous and welcoming demeanor in order to interact successfully with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
  • Experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures
  • Experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation), and in biasedbased policing and ethics
  • Accountability for rules and responsibilities and for own actions and actions of subordinates; and dependability in meeting commitments, work attendance, and punctuality.


Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education _and/or_ security related, law enforcement or military work experience; _and/or_ security-related, law enforcement or military training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Technical Qualifications

  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment, as well as administrative and clerical skills
  • Advanced knowledge of criminal/civil law and police policies and procedures
  • Direct fiscal responsibility and/or indirect fiduciary responsibility for property and equipment
  • Advanced knowledge of emergency management (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery)
  • Advanced knowledge of policing in a higher education environment and applica
