    Position Summary:


    The Principal Scientist 1, In Vivo Pharmacology, will be responsible for providing in vivo pharmacology support to discovery teams including designing, conducting, and interpreting experiments to demonstrate efficacy and toxicity of novel small molecules in animal models.

    The candidate will have a broad background in in vivo pharmacology and will contribute to several preclinical projects as well as the identification of new targets.

    This is a hybrid role with onsite presence required at our San Diego headquarters.


    Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

    These may include but are not limited to:

    • Design, conduct, and interpret in vivo experiments to evaluate the efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and safety of therapeutic candidate molecules in support of drug discovery programs with a focus on metabolic disease.
    • Conceive of and develop new animal models of metabolic disease states.
    • Demonstrate a high level of initiative to troubleshoot and accurately perform data analysis on in vivo studies.
    • Participate in the identification and evaluation of new targets.
    • Analyze and present experimental data using Prism, Excel, MS Office or comparable software.
    • Present findings at team/cross-functional meetings and scientific conferences.
    • Serve as in vivo pharmacology lead for Discovery programs.
    • Serve as a Program Lead to guide, coordinate, and implement cross-functional activities for Discovery programs.
    • Lead external collaborations and outsourced studies.
    • Lead and supervise junior scientists.
    • Author scientific publications and write in vivo pharmacology reports to support regulatory filings.
    • Ensure compliance with company established practices and procedures, including laboratory notebooks, computer files, quality and regulatory guidelines, and safety standards.
    • Perform timely data verification and ensure accuracy for laboratory notebooks, protocols, reports, and regulatory filings.
    • Willing to work some weekends and holidays as needed.

    Education and Experience:

    • Ph.
    D. in Biology, Neuroscience, Behavioral Pharmacology, Physiology, Endocrinology, or related discipline with a minimum of 12+ years of relevant experience.

    Applicants with BS or MS degrees may apply but must demonstrate a minimum of 19+ years of significant and relevant experience.


    • Experience in designing and conducting rodent in vivo pharmacology studies.
    • Experience in in vivo models of metabolic disease required.
    • Experience with non-human primate pharmacodynamic studies preferred.
    • Experience with non-GLP rodent toxicity studies is a plus.
    • Experience working in the pharmaceutical industry required.
    • Experience in program management/leadership desired.
    • Hands on proficiency in rodent handling procedures and in vivo skills including dosing (IV, PO, SC), blood and tissue collection, necropsy, etc.
    • Proficiency with basic surgical techniques.
    • Must be independent and able to follow pre-established experimental designs, as well as develop new methods, protocols, and technologies based on existing literature.
    • Able to effectively communicate and present summaries of research results.
    • Must have a strong work ethic and be enthusiastic for animal and laboratory work.
    • Must be detail-oriented, punctual, reliable, and available on weekends when necessary.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change.

    Technical Knowledge Required:

    Equipment:
    PC, scanners, voice mail and e-mail systems, and common office machines, or ability to be trained.


    Knowledge of other equipment required:
    N/A

    Software Knowledge:
    Windows, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), Prism or equivalent statistical and graphing software.


    Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    Physical Activities:

    On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means.

    Some walking and lifting to 25 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is typically low to moderate.

    Laboratory Activities (if applicable): Biology and chemical laboratory environment experience needed. Environmental health and safety requirements also apply.


    Travel:
    You may be required to travel for up to 5% of your time.

    The Anticipated Base Salary Range:
    $153,000-$204,000


    In addition to your base pay, our total rewards program consists of a discretionary annual target bonus, stock options, ESPP, and 401k match.

    We also provide top-notch health insurance plans for employees (and their families) to include medical, dental, vision and basic life insurance, 20 days of PTO, 10 paid holidays, and a winter company shutdown.


    The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience and education.
