    OPPORTUNITY:

    The School of Design + Construction (SDC) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a full-time, continuous career-track (non-tenure track) Assistant or Associate Professor OR a permanent tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is expected to start August 2024.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES– POSITION (OPEN TRACK):

    Career Track Candidate (all ranks):

    The successful candidate must demonstrate extensive professional experience and academic interests in practice in architecture and have the ability to translate this to effective teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses central to the architecture core curriculum at the undergraduate and/or NAAB accredited graduate level. The ability to conduct research and scholarly activities in a defined area of interest is beneficial but not required.

    100% FTE (90% Teaching, 10% Service)

    Required:Career-Track Assistant Professor

    • Possess an accredited professional Master's degree in architecture by the time of hire.
    • Have at least 3 years of practice experience in architecture demonstrating comprehensive professional knowledge and expertise.
    • Demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice.
    • Candidates must be willing and able to engage with students, including students from diverse disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds
    • Candidate must be willing and able to engage with community and/or industry stakeholders.
    • Possess superior interpersonal skills, including collaboration and teamwork.

    Required:Career-Track Associate Professor

    • Possess an accredited professional Master's degree in architecture by the time of hire.
    • Have at least 4 years of practice experience in architecture demonstrating comprehensive professional knowledge and expertise.
    • Candidate must have a minimum of 4 years teaching and service experience sufficient to be promoted to the rank of Associate Professor.
    • Demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice.
    • Candidates must be willing and able to engage with students, including students from diverse disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds
    • Candidate must be willing and able to engage with community and/or industry stakeholders.
    • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, including collaboration and teamwork

    Preferred for both Career Track Ranks:

    • Hold licensure in architecture.
    • Have higher education teaching experience in an architecture program.
    • Have 4 or more years of professional practice experience in architecture.
    • Demonstrated teaching and/or professional experience addressing a variety of project types (including, but not limited to, residential, commercial, and institutional), responsibility areas (including, but not limited to, pre-design through construction administration, including project management) and scales of development (from building design to urban design).
    • Have received peer-reviewed design awards, publications, competitive public work or other indications of meritorious work in architectural practice.
    • Possess a body of professional architectural work that engages 21st century challenges in innovative ways and/or leverages emergent methods and/or tools to meet these challenges.
    • Demonstrate how their teaching can advance student understanding at the intersections of architectural practice and one or more of the strategic research areas in the SDC which include decarbonization of the built environment, emerging technologies and advanced computational design, and health and well-being.

    Tenure Track Candidate:

    Similar qualifications as above are expected for a tenure track candidate. The successful candidate is also required to advance a program of research/scholarship in their area(s) of expertise in addition to their teaching responsibilities. 100% FTE (45% Research, 45% Teaching, 10% Service). Those with multidisciplinary built environment qualifications in research, practice and teaching are encouraged to apply. Teach undergraduate and graduate level architecture studio, lecture, and seminar courses and courses in allied disciplines within the school, as assigned. Develop a nationally recognized research program which produces peer reviewed publications. Participate in program and school committees as well as college and/or university where appropriate and participate in student advising and mentoring.

    Required:Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

    • Possess an accredited professional Master's degree in architecture by the time of hire.
    • Have at least 3 years of practice experience in architecture demonstrating comprehensive professional knowledge and expertise.

    Preferred: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

    • PhD in Architecture or related field.
    • Hold licensure in architecture.
    • Have higher education teaching experience in an architecture program.
    • Have 4 or more years of professional practice experience in architecture.
    • Demonstrated teaching and/or professional experience addressing a variety of project types (including, but not limited to, residential, commercial, and institutional), responsibility areas (including, but not limited to, pre-design through construction administration, including project management) and scales of development (from building design to urban design).
    • Have received peer-reviewed design awards, publications, competitive public work or other indications of meritorious work in architectural practice.
    • Possess a body of professional architectural work that engages 21st century challenges in innovative ways and/or leverages emergent methods and/or tools to meet these challenges.

    This position is an opportunity to leverage the SDC resources, described below, and establish a research/teaching practice of national and international significance addressing critical design challenges for the future of architecture and the built environment.

    The impact of the ongoing climate crisis challenges researchers to develop effective decarbonization strategies to avoid even more severe outcomes to human and environmental well-being than have already occurred.

    Research topics that address this challenge could include:

    • Building systems including, but not limited to, mass timber and modular construction systems
    • Development of energy-efficient high-performance buildings
    • Exploration of decarbonization strategies
    • Advancing computational design in the practice of design and construction

    A successful research/teaching practice translates research into teaching in both studio and non-studio core professional program courses in the architecture core curriculum. It also contributes to other disciplines within the school via interdisciplinary courses across the curricula.

    The SDC is comprised of accredited academic degree programs in Architecture (B.S + M.Arch NAAB), Construction Management (B.S. ACCE + CM minor), Interior Design (B.A. CIDA + M.A. Research), Landscape Architecture (BLA LAAB), Construction Engineering with the Department of Civil Engineering (B.S. ABET), and emerging certificate programs and a Master of Science in Building Science with Departments in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The School is committed to being the premier destination for integrated design and construction education in the nation. The collaborative make-up of the School enables faculty to work with students from different disciplines in an integrated environment with the goal of promoting and increasing effectiveness within the professions.     In accordance with RCW , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
