Responsibilities

As an integral member of the JGCRI and Global Change Division leadership team, the GL works closely with the division director, team leaders (TLs) and sector managers to establish goals, plans, and strategic directions for the group and division and to resolve key challenges. The GL position is comprised predominantly of research management responsibilities, with significant span of control and/or delegated authority and responsibility. The position generally manages multi-disciplinary projects and staff through project managers and team leaders. Management decisions impact objectives, goals and long-term success of the organization and PNNL.

Provides line management and technical leadership for the group, with responsibility for hiring, developing, and retaining a diverse staff of world class experts in human-earth systems modeling.

Establishes high standards, removes barriers to success, seeks continuous improvement, and establishes a culture of safety, security and quality while creating an inclusive, productive, positive work environment.

Champions the strategic, tactical, and operational success of the division in partnership with colleague-, group-, and division-level leaders as a key member of the JGCRI and GCD Leadership team.

Provides technical leadership and expertise to ongoing research efforts and collaborates with stakeholders to define and shape future research programs that leverage existing strengths and build new capabilities in human-earth systems modeling, and multisector dynamics modeling of energy, economy, water, agricultural, land, and climate systems at global to regional to national to subnational scales.

Works with the Director, JGCRI staff and strategic partners across PNNL to identify and develop new capabilities and projects that support PNNL mission and business strategies.

Assures group staff contributions are appropriately recognized, publicized, and rewarded.

Provides impactful performance feedback to staff members and support their long-term professional development goals.

Implements practices to recruit, develop, assess performance, and retain talented people to support current and future mission needs.

Represents JGCRI inside and outside PNNL (including with UMD), and interacts with stakeholders across PNNL, DOE, and UMD.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 12 years work experience -OR-

MS/MA or higher and 10 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

10+ years of experience working in integrated assessment, energy and climate policy, climate science, or related fields.

PhD or MS/MA in a field related to integrated assessment and multi-sector dynamics (e.g. earth systems science, public policy, economics, climate science, engineering, energy and climate policy, decision science, or other related field).

Demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility in line and capability management.

Experience in managing or overseeing large, complex, projects with a large number of diverse staff.

Familiarity with the Department of Energy's environmental and earth systems science strategy and programs.

Skilled in establishing and communicating a strategic vision, motivating and empowering staff from a range of disciplines, and communicating capabilities and impact to diverse audiences.

Ability to create a safe, secure, and inclusive environment in which all staff can excel, and to promote high impact, team-oriented science.

Good listening skills, experience with promoting effective information flow across an organization, and the ability to build effective relationships vertically and horizontally.

Although JGCRI is primarily focused on computer-based research, some staff also conduct field research, and the successful candidate will be expected to have or gain experience in overseeing such activities, as they hold accountability for safe operations.
