- Clean and flush the wastewater collection system, water distribution system and storm sewer system.
- Clean and repair of pumps, motors, pipe blockages, etc. and correct equipment malfunctions as needed.
- Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including pumping equipment, mechanical machinery, piping systems, and electrical measuring devices. Maintenance includes but is not limited to lubricating equipment and checking for equipment malfunction, replacing mechanical seals in pumps, servicing/repairing bearings in motors and other equipment, assisting in the installation and starting of new equipment and assistance with the execution of the regular preventative maintenance programs.
- Maintain proper maintenance records and operating records.
- Inspect and service mechanical and electrical control systems.
- Read, install, test and repair water meters.
- Assist with cleaning the operating facilities, mowing the lawn and performing routine janitorial duties for the utility property.
- Safely and lawfully operate a motor vehicle in all Wisconsin weather conditions, under exigent circumstances, and with due regard for the public, coworkers, and Village property interests.
- Perform related work as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must possess mechanical aptitude.
- Possess and maintain valid Class D license without restrictions
- Possess or obtain within one year a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without restrictions.
- Possess or obtain within one year Water Distribution License, Bloodborne Pathogens Confined Space Entry, CPR/First Aid certifications. Training can be provided as necessary.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and must have strong interpersonal skills to deal with the public, general contractors and regulatory personnel.
- Ability to communicate and follow instructions both orally and in writing; and perform duties with a minimum of direct supervision.
- Ability to maintain effective and professional working relationships with fellow employees and customers.
- Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationship of the data with reference to established criteria/standards. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, classify, compute, tabulate, measure and/or sort data, as well as assemble, copy and record and transcribe data and information.
- Ability to apply rational and ethical judgment, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when dealing with Utility personnel, public customers, contractors, and community representatives.
- Must reside within a 15 mile radius of the Utility District Building located at ⁄2 Mile Road and be available for 24-hour emergency response, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed to correct problems throughout the District.
- Must possess mechanical aptitude, knowledge, and skills to perform required duties and responsibilities.
- Successfully pass basic physical examination, urinalysis, and eye test to perform the physical abilities and characteristics of the job.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, and the ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration. Depth perception and color vision also required.
- Ability to hear well in various levels of noise and activity required.
- Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as computer and other machines, and or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements such as operating various pieces of equipment.
- Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities and differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
- Ability to frequently climb ladders and stairs; operate in confined spaces; walk through construction sites; occasionally crawl; frequently bend and twist and routinely traverse irregular surfaces. Ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and walk moderate distances.
- Ability to work in and perform physically laborious movements in various Wisconsin weather conditions from heat and rain to snowy and icy conditions.
- Ability to pry open manhole lids and catch basin grates.
- The employee must exert moderate to heavy physical effort in with 7-8 hours per day spent in the field or on construction sites standing for an extended period of time, driving, and/or working near live traffic. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Must have ability to spend most of each day in the field where work is dusty, noisy, and hazardous, alongside heavy equipment, loud and/or live traffic.
- The hours of this position are generally Monday-Friday 6:30am-2:30pm but emergency situations may require work off hours, on weekends or on holidays.

Summary of Job
Under the general direction of the Utility Operations Supervisor and/or the Senior Field Operator, the Utility Field Operator in Training assists in the day-to-day operations and activities of the Caledonia Utility District which includes the water distribution system, the wastewater collection system, and the storm sewer system.

Village of Caledonia contributes 85% of Health Insurance premiums, 50% of premium costs for Dental family or single coverage for full-time employees, and no contribution to Vision insurance (effective on the first of the month following a full calendar month of employment), subject to annual approval by the Village Board.
Holidays: 10 paid holidays / 2 Floating Holidays
Vacation:
With the advance approval of Village Administration, the Village will reimburse an employee for up to 100% of the cost of tuition, books, and testing charges relating to approved educational, courses, or certificate programs up to $2000 per calendar year.
Retirement Benefits:
Employees are eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) upon hire and meeting WRS eligibility requirements.
The Village provides a basic term life insurance policy (subject to annual approval by the Village Board). The amount of term insurance provided depends upon the employee's annual salary.
Disability Insurance:
Short- and long-term disability coverage is available to employees through payroll deduction at the employee's cost.
Sick Leave: 1 day per month for each completed month of employment, with a maximum accrued carry-over of 190 days.
