- Subject to appropriate approvals, due to the nature of this position, a hybrid or remote work arrangement may be available for workplace flexibility, as agreed upon by employee and supervisor.
- All or a portion of this position is funded from a grant and/or contract, which is renewed under the provisions of the grantor of the contract and/or grant; continued employment, therefore, is contingent upon continuation of this funding and satisfactory job performance. - PhD in a relevant biological science
- Proficiency working in a Linux/UNIX environment and familiarity with Python and R
- Proficiency with bioinformatics analysis workflows for transcriptomics
- Relevant bioinformatics experience with statistical software for transcriptome analysis workflows, including gene expression, and graphical presentation of research results.
- Working knowledge of Python &/or R
- Experience in UNIX command line for the use of the High-performance supercomputer (HPRC)
- Creation of statistical visual images and image processing using software packages
- Use of text editors: (e.g., BBedit, vi)
- Determining FASTA statistics
- Familiarity with Sequence Alignment tools
- Familiarity with Genome Annotation tools used on the HPRC
- Comparative transcriptomic analysis harmful algal bloom (HAB) forming species: Characterizes the transcriptomes harmful algal bloom (HAB) species from the Texas coast as part of a national program to identify drivers of blooms of this HAB species. Performs comparison of geographic, temporal, and intra-species variants using bioinformatic tools.
- Gene expression analyses: Utilizes laboratory-based experiments to identify changes in gene expression of HAB species due to variations in environmental conditions. Performs specific tasks that include cleaning, assembly, and mapping of reads, taxonomic and functional annotation of reads/transcripts. Analyzes differential gene expression. Performs comparison of gene expression in culture conditions with field parameters.
- Manuscript preparation: Contributes to preparation of manuscripts for publication. Prepares data for tables. Creates figures and text for manuscripts based on results obtained from research projects.
- Identify drivers of harmful algal blooms (HABs): Contributes to the ECOHAB project to characterize the dynamics of the harmful algal bloom (HAB) species. Utilizes bioinformatic statistical analyses to identify potential plankton community interactions and performs other duties as assigned.

The Department of Oceanography in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU) is part of an alliance of Ocean Sciences at Texas A&M that spans the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences Departments at TAMU Galveston, Geochemical and Environmental Research Group.

What We Want
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be responsible for contributing to the continuing ECOHAB project to identify the drivers for harmful algal blooms (HABs) on the Texas coast.
In collaboration with members of the Campbell lab, this Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct bioinformatic analyses for comparative transcriptomics of HAB species.
Using a bioinformatics approach, the selected candidate will investigate and characterize interactions and top-down control of the coastal plankton community.
Responsibilities of this position will also include manuscript preparation.What You Need to Know
