As a part of SDSU Extension, South Dakota 4-H extends the resources of our university to every community across the state, serving as "the front porch" of SDSU.

We are looking to hire a people-centered educator or youth development professional who is a strong collaborator and is committed to SDSU Extension's core values.

The selected individual will develop and teach educational programs both in school and out-of-school settings, manage volunteers, work with local stakeholders, and more.

This position is located in Selby, South Dakota and is a 12-month, part-time(47% time), leave-eligible position.

South Dakota 4‐H is a community that provides experiences where young people learn by doing.

Youth learn and experience our world through projects in areas like health, science, agriculture, and citizenship, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles.

Young people experience 4‐H through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and 4‐H camps.

We recognize that the youth of today are our future leaders and what they learn and experience in 4-H will help them develop into contributing citizens who will give back to their communities in the future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Our Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisors provide timely 4-H Youth Development research-based information, resources, education, leadership and support to meet the needs of youth in the county and/or reservation while building relationships to enhance and carry out the mission of SDSU Extension.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's Degree in an Education field, Child or Youth Development, or a closely related field with relevant youth development experience and coursework;
• Excellent oral and interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with multiple constituents;
• Ability to lead and/or work as a contributing member of a team;
• Demonstrated experience in planning, teaching, and evaluating educational programs for a variety of youth audiences;
• Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs;
• Effective written communication skills;
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
• Must be able to use a computer for basic word processing, electronic communications, and reporting;
• Valid driver's license and automobile, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel; and
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Previous 4-H or similar youth development experience;
• Demonstrated ability to manage local 4-H operational elements including event management, budget, volunteer and support staff supervision, and committee coordination;
• Demonstrated leadership in building and leading partnerships with volunteer groups, committees, partners, and supporting agencies;
• Demonstrated collaboration in developing funding proposals or grants to support new and/or enhanced programming;
• Experience in publishing extension materials and/or curricula; and
• Experience developing strategies for outreach and expansion including program delivery.

As the outreach arm of our state's 1862 land grant university (South Dakota State University), SDSU Extension is able to provide farmers, ranchers, agri-businesses, communities, families, homeowners, residents, and youth with the research-based information they need to succeed.

SDSU Extension meets the changing needs of South Dakotans with progressive outreach services, ranging from one-on-one interaction and forums to 24/7 online access through the system's extension website.

SDSU Extension organizes program outreach across four program areas:
Agriculture and Natural Resources, Food & Families, Community Vitality, and 4-H Youth Development.

South Dakota 4-H is the state's largest youth development program With a presence in every county across the state, South Dakota 4-H teaches life skills and content knowledge to young people ages 5 to 18.

While every community is different, and so programs may look different depending on the community, our 4-H advisors lead in-school enrichment programs, agri-science experiences and projects, food and consumer projects, natural resource and outdoor education experiences, communication and performing arts projects, develop STEM programs, and support one of the nation's largest shooting sports and rodeo programs.

As the state's 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.

Selby and the Walworth County Community:
Walworth County is home to over 5,300 residents, with the majority living in the City of Mobridge. Although the County is small, it is a recreation paradise.

The County sits on the east side of Lake Oahe and the Missouri River providing ample fishing and boating opportunities.

The terrain of the county is mostly rolling hills covered in farmland with the land dropping towards the Missouri.

The County Seat of Selby sits about 25 minutes from Mobridge and is in the north central part of the County.

Restaurants like the Dakota Maid and seasonally opened Mr. Bob's (home to fresh strawberry and rhubarb milkshakes) grace Selby. Mobridge is also home to several dining establishments and shops. Both Selby and Mobridge also boast overnight lodging options for visitors. The County includes three State Recreation areas; the most popular being Indian Creek Recreation Area.

Selby is about one and half hours (80 mi) west of Aberdeen, SD, one and half hours (89 mi) north of Pierre, SD, and two hours (122 mi) south of Bismarck, ND.

The County also includes the towns of Akasak, Glenham, Java, and Lowry.
