    Surgical Director - Dallas, United States - UT Southwestern

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Surgical Director of the UT Southwestern Spine Center is responsible for the leadership of the multidisciplinary clinical team, with executive oversight from the chairs of Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Anesthesiology and Pain Management. This individual working in collaboration with the Medical Director of the Spine Center and the executive oversight team, will set the strategic vision and ensure its execution for the Spine Center, and have accountability for the Center's clinical care delivery, operative care, patient experience, clinical growth, educational programs, and spine-related research program. Importantly, the Director will report to and work collaboratively with the Medical Director and chairs to achieve the goals of the Spine Center. The Director will demonstrate financial stewardship and manage and be accountable to the Spine Center budget. In addition, the Director will work with Chairs of each department to aid in the career development of faculty. The Director will also serve to promote the reputation of the Center at the local, regional, national, and international level.

    The following represent key opportunities and expectations for the new Director:

  • Leadership and management – Foster relationships with other chairs and clinical staff that emphasize collaboration. As the UTSW Spine Center sits at the intersection of multiple departments, this individual should be adept at work in a collaborative environment, balancing goals of the Spine Center with that of individual departments. The UTSW Spine Center Director should be visible, approachable, and collaborative.
  • Strategic planning – Create a contemporary and dynamic vision beginning with preparation of a plan that focuses on expanding the clinical and operative care of the Spine Center across the region and engage a broad range of constituencies in the development of that vision, including faculty, administration and finance, and hospital leadership.
  • Clinical growth – Develop and execute on strategies to provide highly efficient and high-quality operative and non-operative services to meet current and future demand across the medical center for patients with spine-related disease and disorders.
  • Productivity and profitability – Define performance expectations appropriate to current and future faculty/staff levels. Build upon accountability metrics that address volumes and quality, as well as participation in clinical and didactic education and research activities. Actively collaborate with chairs and administrators on decisions that affect profitability.
  • Outstanding education programs – Enhance the national and international reputation of the Center's contribution to individual residencies and spine fellowship programs.
  • Research initiatives – Increase the scholarly activity conducted in the Spine Center, including attaining extramural funding as well as building upon unique industry partnership opportunities.
  • Culture of service and quality – Strive for an atmosphere with quality and value as a fundamental operating principle, in which patient care and experience are equal to quality and volume in importance. Ensure the drive for service, consistency and quality is a shared vision in all locations where Spine Center operates.
  • National stature – Develop a vibrant vision for a nationally distinguished and contemporary Department of Radiology. Advance an atmosphere of community and collaboration through transparent leadership and open dialogue across all faculty members. Focus on attaining national recognition through external bodies, such as Center of Excellence and USNWR rankings.
  • PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • M.D. or equivalent degree or M.D./Ph.D. from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification through the American Board of Neurological Surgery or American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
  • Eligibility for permanent, unrestricted licensure in Texas.
  • Candidates must qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher at UT Southwestern.
  • KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated astute understanding of academic clinical practice and a deep commitment to clinical excellence based on a patient-centered model of care.
  • Track record of achievement in team building, leadership, managerial and strategic thinking.
  • Extensive experience in academic clinical practice, education and research, with academic achievement and productivity as evidence by scholarship, publications, grant funding, national academic activities and/or recognition in national organizations.
  • Track record that demonstrates the promise for success as a leader in a complex environment that includes an academic medical center and a dynamic health care enterprise.
  • A transformational and strategic leader who is committed to growing and developing faculty, staff, and trainees, achieving prestige through the success of the department and its members.
  • Possesses financial acumen and has a record of successfully managing a budget both revenue and expenses. Understands health system financial goals and works towards achieving them.
  • Empowers, motivates and challenges faculty and staff, while holding them accountable, as a visible and inclusive leader with outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. Display the qualities of a team player who has an open leadership style that promotes partnership.
  • An approachable and enthusiastic leader with an open and transparent communication style and a collegial presence that encourages consensus building, collaboration, and cooperation.
  • Builds trust both in and outside the Spine Center and particularly with each of the contributing/overseeing departments. The individual should seek out, acknowledge and understand other's point of view and be transparent in words and deeds and follows up on commitments.
  • Demonstrated ethical conduct, professionalism, interpersonal skills, organizational skills and management abilities to effectively direct and develop multidisciplinary teams.
  • Consideration may be given to applicants seeking less than a full-time schedule. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.
