- Manage day-to-day activities within the laboratory; assure effective operation and maintenance of equipment; obtain and ensure adequate supplies for experimental needs; maintain compliance with all policies and regulations, ensure optimal organization of lab space, contributing to a safe and efficient working environment for all members.
- Carry out research projects in collaboration with other lab members. Research activities may involve molecular biology, imaging of neural structures, performing mouse behavioral assays, or surgeries for virus injection or implanting imaging lenses into mouse brains.
- Maintain inventories of lab equipment and scientific materials (i.e., probes, antibodies, etc.).
- Establish and maintain online documentation system for protocols and equipment manuals/SOPs
- Act as liaison between laboratory, HHMI staff and host institution staff to achieve scientific goals. Coordinate with these groups on projects such as fixed asset inventories, etc.
- Manage animal protocols and act as liaison between the laboratory and animal care regulatory offices to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Act as Lab Safety Officer, liaising with Harvard Environmental Health & Safety to maintain a safe working environment in the laboratory.
- Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct and may provide instruction regarding experimental protocols. Develop instructional material for routine training purposes.
- Maintain lab website.
- May plan for and provide working supervision to the work of research technicians or other laboratory personnel, including training and mentoring of team members.
- Ph.D. in life sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- A minimum of 6 years of research laboratory experience with at least 3 years in a supervisory/management role is required.
- Experience in managing a molecular biology or cellular biology research laboratory is preferred.
- Proven ability to perform highly complex experiments with high levels of reliability and accuracy within time constraints.
- Experience with mouse husbandry and genetics required.
- Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in an appropriate style.
- Ability to review goals, analyze processes necessary to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Lab Manager to join the team of Dr. Catherine Dulac at Harvard University. The position provides excellent opportunities for performing operational management as well as technical and scientific responsibilities. It is suited for a highly productive and dedicated individual with extensive experience managing a lab, who also wishes to spend a portion of their time at the bench.
The Dulac lab focuses on transcriptional, genetic, and optical approaches to explore the molecular and neuronal basis of instinctive social and sickness behaviors in the mouse. More information about the team and their research can be found at:
About the Senior Laboratory Manager role:
The Senior Lab Manager will play a key role in managing the day-to-day operations involved in running the lab, and serving as the primary liaison between the lab and various external partners. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, extremely organized, engaged, proactive and resourceful individual who can multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
