Description

The ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research in Harrison, NJ has an opening for a
PhD position (f/m/d) in the Energy Meteorology team of the Wind Energy Systems working group at the Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg.

The focus of this position will be on developing an AI-based method to refine information from mesoscale simulations of the atmosphere into high-spatial-resolution data on wind and wave conditions for wind turbine sites in the German Bight.

In recent years, large-eddy simulations (LES) have become a popular tool for studying the interaction between wind turbines and the atmospheric flow.

However, due to the high computing power required, LES cannot be performed for longer time periods, such as the lifetime of a wind farm.

Mesoscale simulations have been used to generate wind atlases, such as the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA).

Job Description

In the third-party funded research project MOUSE, you will develop an AI-based method, such as the analog ensemble, to link the results of mesoscale simulations and LES.

This will allow for the use of predictors in the mesoscale data to derive LES-compliant information about wind and wave conditions, as well as turbine behavior, for longer periods of time.

The goal is to achieve a more accurate description of environmental conditions and turbine behavior than what is currently possible.

The MOUSE project will provide you with an HPC computer and the necessary infrastructure to perform simulations and develop the AI method
