    Position Overview

    SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory operates two million square feet of premier scientific research and experimental buildings, laboratories, clean rooms, light fabrication, office and conference room spaces, on a 426-acre site in Menlo Park, CA.

    Under the general direction of the Director of the Facilities and Operations Division, the Associate Director of Engineering & Architecture will be responsible for the Facility Engineering Department, which is tasked with:

    Conventional Facility Design

    Design Management of Construction

    Owners representative services

    Commissioning

    Code Compliance & Review

    The Facilities Engineering department consists of 30+ staff consisting of Civil, Structural, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing and Controls Engineers, Architectural services, drafters, and support staff. The Associate Director of Engineering & Architecture serves as the primary coordination point with the Campus Planning, Project Management, Construction Management Departments and with Major Project Directors.

    Your specific responsibilities include:

    Identify long-range facility project/program needs.

    Define and lead conventional facility engineering activities.

    Plan and direct department activities.

    Hold managers accountable for meeting established goals.

    Interface with senior management to develop and implement lab-wide strategic planning

    Develop and mentor managers and senior professionals.

    Exercise advanced knowledge and application of relevant codes & regulations.

    Develop and implement procedures, policies, workflows, and standard operating procedures.

    Define activities of assigned groups, assess staffing needs, commit resources, evaluate performance, and develop staff.

    Oversee technical professionals responsible for a comprehensive, multi-faceted facility.

    Research and recommend division policies and strategies.

    Responsible for providing leadership, broad oversight, and implementation of strategic and tactical planning, design services, and operational workflows, technical oversight of infrastructure planning, and infrastructure resiliency/reliability.

    Lead strategic planning, multiyear project prioritization, planning, and funding, and strategic condition assessment programs.

    Develop and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

    Identify and assess systems and components critical to the continuous operation of the Lab.

    Ensure adherence to regulations, policies and principles of safety, financial management, human resources, contracting, information systems, environmental regulations, and facilities management.

    Articulate facility information through various venues such as discussions, meetings, fact sheets, reports, design documentation, briefings, and presentations.

    Develop and review policies and procedures; interpret and manage policies and procedures for assigned area.

    Clarify and resolve complex problems spanning multiple areas or technical fields; develop or oversee program implementation within assigned area. Implement and oversee condition assessment programs. Manage assigned projects.

    Research and develop new initiatives and technology to improve service, enhance revenue, and realize system wide opportunities.

    Other duties may also be assigned.

    Manage Systems Engineering & Reliability Assessments.

    Lead and/or oversee Root Cause Analysis investigations.

    To be successful in this position you will bring:

    Bachelor's degree in engineering or other appropriate technical area, or combination of technical education, training, and experience. Ten years of related, progressively responsible experience requiring extensive leadership and strategic expertise in facilities operations, maintenance, and planning, performing duties similar to those listed above.

    Strong technical engineering expertise.

    Experience managing and developing engineering staff as an A&E.

    Understanding of uptime management and construction in an active facility.

    Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    Experience with AutoCAD and BlueBeam Revu. Revit/Navis experience preferred.

    Overseeing peer review, plan check, and requirements management processes.

    Demonstrated ability to ensure quality, schedule, and budget in execution of design and construction.

    Demonstrated technical skills to lead teams in troubleshooting and resolving system operational issues.

    Understand and apply root cause analysis to equipment failure and facility incidents in order to prevent recurrence.

    Certifications and Licenses:

    Professional Engineering licensure highly preferred

    The expected pay range for this position is $189,000 to $262,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
