    POSITION SUMMARY

    Geriatric Psychiatrist and Psychiatry Residency Core Faculty will focus on the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders in the elderly and improvement of psychiatric care for healthy and ill elderly patients. This role is an academic appointment to not only to teach Psychiatry residents, but also Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Geriatric Residents, as well as interprofessional students ie PAs, NPs, LCSWs, LPCs, Certified Recovery Specialists, Case Managers, Community Health Workers and medical students inclusive of ATSU SOMA.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & FUNCTIONS

    While living and demonstrating our Core Values, the Geriatric Psychiatrist and Psychiatry Residency Core Faculty will:

    • Geriatric Psychiatrist and Psychiatry Residency Core Faculty will have both clinical and educational responsibilities. Administrative responsibilities will include the development of the Geropsychiatry program and consultative services within the TWCCH medical facilities and collaborating in the further development of the Geriatric Psychiatry Service line.
    • Clinical responsibilities will include consultative services and/or ongoing psychiatric care for the geriatric population in both psychiatric and primary care settings
    • The incumbent will function independently to assume the role of primary psychiatric provider, team provider, or consultant depending on the patient-side needs
    • Treatment planning focuses on utilization of pharmacological, psychotherapeutic and technological interventions as well as appropriate referral for additional treatment and/or for adjunctive psychosocial interventions
    • The anticipated patient population will primarily be geriatric, but when needed by the patient-side sites, the incumbent may also be expected to provide care to a non-geriatric patient population
    • Remaining abreast of and engaged in all clinical Mental Health policies and procedures at a Federal, State and Local level, as well as completing required/mandated training
    • Completing all electronic medical record documentation in a timely manner as required by TWCCH
    • Participate in local and regional Elder Abuse Task Force as required
    • Geriatric-sensitive screening for telemedicine readiness based on status of digital access, technological literacy, and personal disability (vision, hearing, physical, cognitive)
    • Participation in a collaborative care model (integration of behavioral health into primary care and Dental)
    • Responsible for the delivery of comprehensive, clinically effective psychiatric care to Geriatrics in an inpatient setting as deemed appropriate.
    • Duties include intake assessments, diagnostic formulation, medication management, treatment planning and the discharge of patients.
    • Models collaborative practice by fostering a culture of trust, respect and fairness to all stakeholders and all clinical staff
    • Be a resource for the primary care physicians and the integration of behavioral health into primary care
    • Serve as a collaborative physician for psychiatric nurse practitioners and others.
    • Attend administrative and clinic meetings and provide in-service education as appropriate, such as Behavioral Health Level 10 and the Clinical Advisory Board Meetings, and others as assigned
    • Assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process or orientation of new staff when requested
    • Provide a full range of psychiatric services to assigned patients. Services provided include direct care of patients in the clinical setting including: assessment, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of patients and determining the degree of disabilities in patients
    • Prescribe medication to patients as deemed necessary and will conduct medication management
    • Document all services in the patient's electronic medical record
    • Analyze and evaluate patient data and test findings to diagnose nature and extent of mental disorder
    • Prescribe, direct, and administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders
    • Collaborate with physicians, social workers, psychiatric nurses, or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress
    • Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social and medical history obtained from patients, relatives, and other professionals
    • Examine or conduct laboratory or diagnostic tests on patient to provide information on general physical condition and mental disorder
    • Participate in treatment team activities to include the development and periodic review of patient treatment plans and will take necessary steps when a patient refuses treatment
    • Provide forty (40) hours of service per week, including thirty-two (32) hours of direct patient care per week (75 visits per week). Must be present (40) forty hours per week, which includes administrative time
    • Ensure that Behavioral Health on-call rotation is developed and maintained
    • Participate in behavioral health on-call rotation, which may include after hours, holidays and weekends
    • Develop evidence-based clinical standard operating procedures
    • Uphold federal and state mental health regulations.
    • Ensure all peer review audits are completed in a timely fashion as requested
    • Timely completion of patient records in accordance with the organization's Open Document Policy
    • Adequately completes required peer reviews or other audits within required time frames.
    • Demonstrate compliance and highest integrity with industry recognized billing practices
    • Achieve and maintain Board certification, CMES, ACLS/BLS certification
    • In the future may require to participate in call rotation.
    • All other duties as assigned

    PSYCHIATRY RESIDENCY CORE FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Precept residents in outpatient and as necessary the inpatient setting
    • Lead 8-10 resident didactic conferences per academic year; if leading noon conferences this counts as two conferences. Conference requirement may change based schedule
    • Be a role model of professionalism
    • Demonstrate commitment to delivery of safe, quality, cost-effective, patient-centered care.
    • Demonstrate a strong interest in the education of residents
    • Devote sufficient time to the educational program to fulfill supervisory and teaching responsibilities
    • Administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating all learners such as residents, medical students, interns etc.
    • Regularly participate in organized clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and conferences
    • Pursue faculty development designed to enhance skills at least annually
      • as an educator
      • in quality improvement and patient safety
      • fostering provider's and residents' well-being
      • patient care based on the provider's own practice-based learning and improvement efforts.
    • Participate in annual program evaluation
    • Participate in curriculum development as requested
    • Participate in scholarly activity and assist program with the demonstration of accomplishments in at least three (3) of the following domains:
      • Research in basic science, education, translational science, patient care, or population health
      • Peer-review grants
      • Quality improvement and/or patient safety initiatives
      • Systematic reviews, meeta-analysis, review articles, chapters in medical textbooks, or case reports
      • Creation of curricula, evaluations tools, didactic educational activities, or electronic educational materials
      • Contribution to professional committees, educational organizations, or editorial boards
      • Innovations in education
    • Assist with monitoring resident stress, with the goal of identifying mental or emotional conditions that inhibit performance and/or learning and advise the Program Director
    • Complete annual ACGME faculty survey
    • Must directly observe, evaluate and frequently prove timely feedback on resident performance during each rotation or similar educational assignment.
    • Timely completion of resident evaluations documented us MyEvaluations
    • Actively participate in Clinical Competency Committee meetings
    • Actively participate in resident interviews as requested
    • Participate in resident orientation and graduation

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • MD/DO Degree
    • Graduate Medical Education in an ACGME Accredited Psychiatry Residency Program
    • Current certification by the Board of Psychiatry or possess qualifications acceptable to the Review Committee
    • DEA Certification
    • BLS and ACLS Certification
    • Valid physician license for State of Pennsylvania
    • No history of professional misconduct, as documented by National Data Bank, Child Abuse and Criminal History clearances. (Any infraction must be reviewed in detail with the VP HR and CMO)
    • Previous leadership / administrative experience required
    • Be willing to combine administrative/teaching and patient care responsibilities
    • Possess strong administrative and team building skills
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Previous participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency program or graduate medical education administrative experience is highly desired
    • Recent scholarly activity such as peer reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees or educations organizations highly desired
    • Valid driver's license
