Our flagship products, Sophia and Workforce Edge are at the forefront of providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality education solutions. Sophia offers self-paced online general education courses transferable for college credit, while Workforce Edge is a cutting-edge education benefit management platform.
We're seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to spearhead an engineering team, driving the development of an integration and user experience-focused team working across both Sophia and Workforce Edge. This pivotal role requires a visionary leader who is not only technically adept but also possesses exceptional team-building and mentorship skills. We're looking for someone who leads from the front, is unafraid to dive into the trenches alongside their team, and is passionate about cultivating a culture of innovation and collaboration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead and inspire a team of talented engineers to deliver high-quality integration and user experience solutions for Sophia and Workforce Edge.
Drive the end-to-end development lifecycle, from ideation and design to implementation and deployment, ensuring timely delivery of projects.
Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to define requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the engineering team, encouraging experimentation with new technologies and methodologies.
Build out additional engineering teams and capabilities as needed in alignment with business objectives.
Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship to team members, helping them grow both professionally and personally.
Act as a champion for best practices in software engineering, ensuring code quality, scalability, and maintainability.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for enhancing product integration and user experience.
Manage engineering teams and external vendors across multiple geographies and time zones.
Ensure security and integrity of all information systems and data.
Provide regular updates to senior management and peers about ongoing and future projects. Assist in creating and managing the adoption of IT governance controls
across various technical applications.
Own engineering operational excellence, including the creation of and monitoring metrics for continuous improvement.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Skills:
Demonstrated ability to identify and solve ambiguous problems - technical, product, and people.
Track record of employing high-quality architectural principles, and identifying and choosing between multiple architectural options.
Solid understanding of Database technologies such as SQL, PostgreSQL, and relational database schema design.
Experience with Ruby, NodeJS, NextJS, and other modern development languages and frameworks (direct experience is a plus),
Experience designing and implementing AWS Architecture.
Proficiency with tools such as Jira (advanced proficiency is a plus).
Experience working with user-facing content management systems and websites is a plus.
Experience working in an agile environment.
Entrepreneurial mindset.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to influence at all levels in the organization.
Passion for solving problems in the education sector is a plus.'
Work Experience:
5+ years of experience working in engineering space required.
1 to 2 years of production experience in AWS or GCP cloud environments
3+ years of experience managing engineering teams.
1 to 2 years of experience managing offshore development team(s) preferred
1 to 2 years of experience defining and scaling best-in-class engineering principles across multiple engineering teams.
1 to 2 years of experience building world-class engineering teams.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or a related field required or 5+ years experience
Master's Degree preferred.
AWS Certified Architect preferred
Other:
Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time.
Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Typical office setting.
Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.
Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.
Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
Access information using a computer.
Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.
Effectively cope with stressful situations.
Strong mental acuity.
Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
