Historically, Cincinnati Children's is well known for leading international efforts to develop vaccines for polio (Albert Sabin) and for rotavirus (David Bernstein, MD, MA and Richard Ward, PhD), setting a high bar for basic and translational research in infectious diseases. The division has built a strong program in transplant infectious diseases, led by Lara Danziger-Isakov, MD, MPH, and in antimicrobial stewardship, led by David Haslam, MD. For the past seven years, the division has been the leading research division at Cincinnati Children's in terms of extramural funding with more than $22 million in total award dollars in fiscal year 2022.
