    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The District Attorney evaluates all reported crimes to determine if sufficient evidence exists to prosecute individuals for felony and misdemeanor offenses. In those cases where the District Attorney finds sufficient evidence, a criminal prosecution is undertaken. The Department also supervises the Victim/Witness Program.

    ABOUT THE POSITION

    Under close supervision, to perform clerical work which does not require speed typing skills; to learn and utilize pertinent subject matter procedures, precedents and policies; and to perform related work as required.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    This is the entry level for the clerical class series which does not require speed typing skills. Incumbents normally are considered to be in training status and work under close supervision, performing repetitive and clearly defined tasks.

    IDEAL CANDIDATE

    The ideal candidate should have good attention to detail, office experience working in a file room, pulling files and data entry for a daily calendar, scanning case files into a document storage system as well as assisting other clerks in the department with various office related duties.

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Clerk I:

    Interviews individuals in a public office or over the telephone, obtains or furnishes the desired information or refers them to the proper sources; completes or assists others with the completion of a variety of forms, documents and records; receives money in payment of bills, fines and fees; gives receipts and keeps records of collections; sorts, codes, posts, proofs, alphabetizes, indexes and files a variety of materials; checks reports, records and other data for accuracy; assists with the preparation of reports; accepts and delivers messages; pages and locates staff; counts and balances cash; receives, distributes and dispatches mail; follows up on materials sent to other people for review or completion; learns to operate a variety of office equipment, including a typewriter, copiers, calculator, and dispatch radio; may learn to operate switchboard; may serve as receptionist; learns codes, regulations and terminology essential to department.

    Clerk II:

    Interviews individuals in a public office or over the telephone and obtains or furnishes the desired information or refers them to the proper source; completes or assists others with completion of a variety of forms, documents and records; receives money in payment of bills, fines and fees; gives receipts and keeps records of collections; sorts, codes, posts, proofs, alphabetizes, indexes and files a variety of materials; checks reports, records and other data for accuracy; researches, extracts, transfers and summarizes information from records; prepares statistical reports; prepares acknowledgment and replies to letters; screens and schedules appointments; accepts and delivers messages; pages and locates staff; counts and balances cash; receives, distributes and dispatches mail; follows up on materials sent to other people for review or completion; keeps stock of office supplies and orders new supplies when needed; operates a variety of office equipment, including a typewriter, copier, calculator and dispatch radio; may operate a switchboard periodically; may serve as receptionist.

    TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:

    Clerk I:

    Knowledge of: Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; basic arithmetic skills.

    Ability to: Understand oral and written directions; learn office rules, methods and procedures; learn to operate various standard office machines; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

    Clerk II:

    Knowledge of: Modern office practice and procedures; proper techniques in operation of modern office machines.

    Ability to: Perform responsible clerical work under general supervision; use good judgment in choosing among available alternatives; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationship.

    These employment standards are typically attained with one year of experience comparable to that of a Clerk I with Shasta County.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception.

    Employee must know how to lift correctly when moving files; know proper procedure when taking checks up and down stairs for signing; also correct procedure for climbing on ladder to retrieve checks in vault in Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office.

    • Positions in this classification are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the County and the United Public Employees of California - General Unit.
    • Employees in this classification are covered under the CalPERS retirement program. Depending on the provisions of the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) and other applicable laws, an employee in this classification will be covered under one of the following CalPERS retirement formulas: (1) 2% at 55, (2) 2% at 60, or (3) 2% at 62.     THESE BENEFITS DO NOT APPLY TO EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES

    Holidays:
    12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year.

    Vacation:
    10 working days a year during the first three years of service; 15 working days a year - 4 through 9 years of service; 17 working days a year - 10 through 15 years of service; 20 working days a year - 16 or more years of service. Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment. For purposes of vacation accrual, a working day is no more than 8 hours.

    Sick Leave:
    96 hours of sick leave are earned each year with no maximum accrual. Employees terminating in good standing after completion of 5 years of continuous service will receive a pro-rata payoff of accumulated sick leave. Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement. Note - accrued sick leave may not be used until after three months of employment. Accrued paid leave benefits are used in conjunction with FMLA/CFRA as appropriate.

    Bereavement:
    Maximum of 24 hours for each non-concurrent death in the immediate family.

    Health Plan:
    Shasta County contracts with PERS for medical insurance and has an alternative Blue Cross plan. Employees in the Teamsters bargaining unit are insured through a Teamsters Trust plan. Depending on the plan selected, the County pays most, or all, of the employee premium, and contributes a portion of the dependent premium. Contributions are made for a portion of a retiree's insurance premium.

    Dental Plan:
    The County pays a portion of the employee's and dependents' premium for dental insurance. The employee pays the full premium during the first six months of coverage.

    Vision Plan:
    The County pays the employee premium and employees may enroll dependents at their own expense.

    Life Insurance:
    The County pays the premium for life insurance for most employees. The amount of coverage varies by bargaining unit.

    Retirement:
    The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security. Members hired prior to May 8, 2011 are covered under the retirement formula of 2% @ 55 benefit. Members hired after May 8, 2011 but before January 1, 2013 are covered under the retirement formula of 2% @ 60 benefit. Members hired after January 1, 2013 are covered under the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) with a benefit formula of 2% @ 62. Please review the specific MOU for stipulated retirement formulas.

    Employees pay 7.75% of his or her salary, on a pre-tax basis for a period of time as specified in his or her labor contact, or Personnel Rules as appropriate.

    Miscellaneous:

    • Deferred Compensation plans available through specified companies.

    • IRC Section 125 plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.

    • Optional insurance products are available.
