    Position Summary


    The Content Manager, Interpretation will spearhead the development, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of in-gallery art, outdoor sculpture and grounds, and architectural interpretation across all campuses of the institution.

    This role will create (in partnership with curatorial and educational teams) interpretive content that will invite visitors to make relevant connections between the exhibitions and collections at Crystal Bridges and the Momentary.

    The Content Manager, Interpretation will demonstrate a commitment to fostering socially, intellectually, and physically accessible and inclusive visitor experiences.

    This position will serve as project director for various interpretive initiatives related to the Museum's robust exhibition program and continuing reevaluation of its permanent collection galleries, as well as our outdoor and architectural spaces.


    The Content Manager, Interpretation will collaborate closely with curators, educators, designers, editors, digital producers and others to establish a museum-wide interpretation strategic plan and goals (both digitally and in print).

    This position will liaise with others in the national field of Art Museum Interpretation, building relationships and gaining and maintaining the latest in innovative, inclusive interpretation approaches from a variety of perspectives.

    The Content Manager, Interpretation will also implement and maintain a robust research and evaluation program in partnership with the Director of Research and Evaluation to continually assess the impact of museum-wide interpretation efforts.

    The position reports directly to the Content Strategy Director in Marketing & Communications.

    Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

    Oversees and develops, in collaboration with curators and educators, the interpretation plans for exhibitions and installations (in the galleries, on the grounds, and in other museum-related spaces) that engage visitors aesthetically, emotionally, and intellectually and deliver on the museum's mission.

    Leads the review and editing of all didactic content for exhibitions and collections materials, working collaboratively with curators, editors, and others.

    Provides final content and advises design team on wall and label text placement with an eye to visitor engagement and accessibility.

    Develops gallery guides and hands-on interpretive materials in collaboration with key education team members.

    Works closely with the Creative design team, including designers and project managers, to create cohesive, innovative, and dynamic exhibition design plans.

    Directs the development, writing, and distribution of project Content Thematic Briefs, in collaboration with the project content team members and the Content Strategy Director.

    Oversees visitor testing and evaluation of interpretative materials with the Research and Evaluation team.

    Produces and/or reviews, in collaboration with the Digital Media team, the content for digital platforms such as apps, interactive kiosks, audio guides, and other digital interpretive projects.

    Manages one to two interns per semester (three times a year).
    Develops in collaboration with other departments and manages budget for museum-wide interpretation initiatives.

    Attends Leadership team meetings to hear the breadth and depth of projects impacting the institution's interpretation of strategic plan and perspective.

    Experiments with new interpretative approaches and work with research partners to evaluate constantly evolving solutions and share results from research with peers in the museum and across the field.

    Seeks out and works with internal and external experts at the outset of each project to ensure inclusive access for people with disabilities, identity-based cultural communities, and other relevant stakeholders.

    Works collaboratively with the Community Engagement Initiative to ensure all exhibition and collection didactic materials foster awareness, inclusivity, and accessibility at all levels.

    Demonstrates a continued commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) priorities of the institution in creating cohesive, comprehensive interpretation strategies and tactics.

    Creates and oversees many interpretive and didactic materials related to exhibitions and the permanent collection. This includes texts, images, digital and hands-on activities, printed guides, audio content, and other interpretive materials and experiences.
    Produces, maintains, and shares Experience Roadmaps for collections and exhibitions projects.
    Negotiates with collaborators to ensure content is organized, understandable, relevant, free of jargon, and engaging.

    Evaluate the effectiveness of interpretive materials through formal and informal assessments in collaboration with colleagues in the research and evaluation department.

    Research "next practices" in the museum field and innovate, testing new ideas for experiential engagement.
    Assists with exhibition advisory groups and works towards a community-centered approach. Advocates for content that invites multiple voices, honors lived experience and attends to absence.
    Ensure that institutional content strategy adheres to basic DEIA fundamentals and
    anti-racist practices by implementing and maintaining a collaborative inclusion strategy.
    Assist in creating and delivering the institution's storytelling and
    experience strategy.
    Works with the Content Strategy team to maintain consistency relative to institutional content strategy, voice, tone, messaging, and style.

    Works closely with the Marketing & Communications department to shape stories about the collection and exhibitions that are shared across various distribution channels.

    Collaborates with the Education team to develop content for guide training and public programs.
    Collaborates with Guest Services and Protection Services and provides exhibitions and collections training to enhance point of purchase.
    Works to share exhibitions and collections talking points and content internally. Create shared understanding and consistent messaging.

    Additional Responsibilities
    Participates on a variety of cross-departmental teams as requested.
    Prepares materials for grants; gives occasional tours; makes presentations.
    Creates, refines, champions, and advances interpretive planning and execution for the collection galleries and exhibitions.
    Organizes their own workflow; sets and meets deadlines, creates and manages schedules for interpretive work; facilitates interpretive meetings.

    Minimum Qualifications


    Education, Training, and Traits:
    Bachelor's Degree in a humanities-based field from an accredited college or university is required. Subject areas may include Art, Art History, Museum Studies, English, and Communications, among others.
    Minimum two years of experience leading and managing content creation across multiple platforms; museum experience preferred.
    Superior writing and editing skills, particularly for voice and tone.
    A basic understanding of differing learning styles and communication methods in writing for various audiences is necessary.
    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; must be able to communicate clearly and professionally.
    Excellent project management skills, including meeting facilitation, time management, attention to detail, and problem-solving.
    Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, and implement multiple overlapping interpretation projects, and communicate effectively in a team setting.

    Effective in fast-paced working environments with absolute deadlines and inflexible production budgets, with a keen ability to juggle multiple projects and adjust to unexpected challenges.

    Willingness and ability to travel for program development and presentation; some regional or national travel may be required.
    Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required.
    Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office including Outlook and PowerPoint.
    Ability to use or willingness to learn specialized software.
    Ability and willingness to work occasional weekends and evenings.
    Patience, a good sense of humor, and a genuine love of the arts are appreciated.

    Work Environment:
    Work will be performed in an office environment and in museum spaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be reviewed and evaluated in the case of exhibitions exceeding noise levels. Some overnight travel may be necessary.
