    Research Tech II Job description - Metabolomics Co re Lab

    This is an excellent opportunity fo r a sample preparation Research Technician II working in a core laborato ry.

    Duke's Department of Molecular Physiology has an immediate need for a sample preparation Research Technician II in the Metabolomics Core La b located in downtown Durham, NC.

    This is an onsite, daytime, weekdays position. We recognize that some applicants may need to work an abbreviated schedule due to other responsibilities or activities. Acknowledging this, the applicant has the potential for scheduled work hours to range from 30-40 hours per week.


    Responsibilities:

    • Accurately and efficiently perform a var iety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests , experiments, and other activities in support of operations of the Metabolomics Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory.
    • Prepare biologic samples inclu ding plasma, serum, urine, lysates of cultured cells, and homogenates of tissues from human subjects and laboratory animals in a quantitative ma nner for analysis according to established procedures and protocols incl uding but not limited to derivatization(s), protein precipitation extrac tions, liquid extractions, and solid phase extractions (SPE).
    • Prepare tiss ue homogenates using a TissueLyser and/or Polytron. Homoge nize matrices such as liver, heart, muscle.
    • Prepare quantitative aliquots of samples and reagents using pipettes (pipette / pipet / pipettor)
    • Prepar e laboratory reagents including capping and labeling tubes and vials.
    • Main tain sufficient inventoryof materials and supplies for performance of d uties.
    • Receive, store, and maintain organization of biological specimens i n freezers.
    • Prepare and maintain inventory of reagents and solutions, incl uding standard and calibrator stocks, quality control samples, chemicals ,and pH-adjusted buffers.
    • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
    • Dispose of the biohazardous and chemical wastein a safe manner.
    • Adhere to establi shed laboratory recordkeeping protocols.
    • Adhere to all Duke safety protoco ls.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
    Education/Training

    Work gen erally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychol ogy or other directly related scientific field.

    None required above education/training req uirement.

    OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE


    Preferred Experience/Skills:

    • Analytical chemistry degree is preferred.
    • Knowledge of analytical chemis try, biochemistry, and metabolism or metabolomics is preferred.
    • Must be ab le to follow SOP and work effectively and independently in a fast-paced,multidisciplinary team environment.
    • Strong attention to detail including record keeping coupled with organizational skills.
    • Must be able to safely handle chemical reagents and biohazardous materials.
    • Must have excellent o ral and written communication skills.
