    Department Summary


    University Health Services (UHS) is a unit within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management and is a nationally accredited (AAAHC) outpatient clinic providing primary care to students at the University of Oregon.

    All staff are required to uphold the values of the UHS.

    This position works in support of the University Health Services mission and vision and is consistent with UO policy. Some aspects of this position may be completed in collaboration with other University departments.

    Position Summary


    The Assistant Director for Diagnostic Services is responsible for directing the overall operations of the Laboratory and Radiology Departments at the UHS.

    The Assistant Director for Diagnostic Services is responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of patient care programming and departmental policies/procedures in support of the UHS mission


    This includes:

    assuring services are in compliance with professional standards, and state, federal, and university regulatory requirements; managing and responding to quality improvement studies; maintaining adequate staffing models in support of service lines; ensuring all equipment is safe and operational and that adequate supplies and equipment exist to meet operational needs; evaluating and supporting staff development; implementing and responding to data analytics pertaining to department operations; creating and maintaining a financially sustainable business model; providing day to day supervision for department operations; providing effective and strategic leadership; and other functions as necessary.

    In addition to providing overall leadership, the Assistant Director for Diagnostic Services serves in an active capacity as a Medical Technologist (or equivalent).


    The Assistant Director for Diagnostic Services reports to the Director of Ancillary Services and serves as a member of the Leadership Team.

    The medical laboratory director and Quality Improvement Committee provide ongoing review of the technical elements of this position.

    This individual is responsible for establishing collaborative relationships with other departments within Health Services and across campus to further the mission of the department and University Health Services.

    This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and routine screening of Medicaid and Medicare Exclusion Lists.

    Employee loses eligibility for employment if on the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) and/or System of Award Management (SAM).

    In addition, employees must follow Compliance with UHS policies regarding tuberculosis screening, measles and mumps (MMR), seasonal flu, hepatitis B, and other immunization requirements.

    Minimum Requirements


    • ASCP Certified Medical Technologist (MT) or equivalent
    • Five years of experience as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
    • Experience in a high-complexity medical laboratory setting
    • Two years of leadership experience with a clinical laboratory quality assurance program
    • Leadership experience with laboratory licensure and accreditation processes
    • Experience with laboratory leadership responsibilities such as handling after-hours critical values; participating in negotiations with vendors; completing accurate cost-benefit analysis for lab tests; handling laboratory equipment procurement and installation/calibration
    Professional Competencies


    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Skills and abilities in all aspects of laboratory testing
    • Knowledge of laboratory regulations such as CAP or CLIA
    • Computer skills in MS Office applications and laboratory information systems (LIS)
    • Experience with teamwork, respect, integrity, innovation, and strong work ethic
    • Experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Experience working with Orchard Harvest LIS.
    • Experience managing other diagnostic services, such as radiology.
    • Experience supervising others within a healthcare setting, including recruitment, hiring, and performing evaluations.
    • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
    • Four years of laboratory training and/or experience in a high-complexity hematology lab
    • Two years of training and/or experience in moderate complexity testing in chemistry, hematology, virology, and bacteriology
    • Experience leading a team through diversity, equity, and inclusion training.
