Description
Under supervision, provides general support for a variety of human services programs to include case management support to clients in the office, clinic setting, or in the field for various County departments; and performs related work as required.
This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH).

One year of full-time experience performing a variety of duties in support of a human services function which included providing direct client services; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
An associate degree or equivalent coursework in human services field, such as social work, home economics, child development, psychology, criminal justice or related social, behavioral or nutritional sciences may substitute for the required experience.
A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment.
Certain positions may require certification as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) within six months of appointment.
Note, this list may be used to fill Countywide vacancies within several departments of Washoe County. However, the current vacancy is with the NNPH agency's WIC office. The WIC program provides nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding support, community referrals, and nutritious foods.
These services are offered to pregnant women, infants, and children up to age 5.
The Countywide Ideal Candidate Will Have

Experience providing direct client services, conduct client interviews and assess needs
Be a fast-paced logistical problem solver, implementing those decisions while being mindful that program goals and outcomes are a cooperation of both internal and external customer service excellence
Demonstrate strong work ethic and exceptional communication skills, encompassing proficiency in reading, writing, comprehension, and data entry
Bilingual-Spanish fluency in both oral and written communication (required for some positions throughout the County)
NNPH Ideal Candidates Will Also Have
Knowledge and/or experience/education with nutrition, particularly related to maternal child health, breastfeeding and/or infant feeding
Experience in one or more of the following:
Working in WIC
Providing individualized health, nutrition and/or wellness education
Working as a diet technician or working towards an associate degree in nutrition
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a client schedule
Some familiarity with Electronic Medical Records
Human Services Agency Ideal Candidates Will Also Have
Experience working with challenges and clients in emotionally charged situations
Experience assisting families to develop budgets, access resources and develop structure and routine
Effective interpersonal skills with clients, division staff, representatives of other departments and members of the community
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and possess strong critical thinking skills
The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non-Supervisory covers the Human Services Support Specialist I position.
Selected candidates may be required to meet the Northern Nevada Public Health immunization requirements and provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination received after September 1, 2022, at the time of appointment.
All NNPH positions do require selected candidates to have the 2-step TB Skin Test at time of appointment.Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation.
Effective July 1, 2019, the $40.25 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck.
Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification.
Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.
