    Stanford University's Office of Development (OOD) is seeking an Associate Director of Development for the IDEAL Initiatives and Programs team.

    OOD advances Stanford's mission by raising philanthropic support from alumni, parents, families, friends, and institutional funders. Working in concert with volunteers and academic leaders, OOD staff members strive to accelerate Stanford's purposeful impact in the world. Stanford is committed to a donor-centric approach to development. Every member of the Office of Development staff plays a role in providing the university's donors with the service and attention that ensures an exceptionally positive and fulfilling philanthropic experience.

    The IDEAL Initiatives and Programs team (IIP) provides leadership and support focused on strengthening philanthropic relationships within Stanford's emerging philanthropic communities and advancing the IDEAL fundraising Initiative. IIP employs targeted engagement and giving strategies to grow Stanford's donor and volunteer pipeline, attract support to help realize the IDEAL vision, and ensure inclusive philanthropy. The team collaborates with other development teams, the Stanford Alumni Association, and other campus stakeholders, to cultivate alumni donors and volunteers who share a commitment to Stanford's mission.

    Job Purpose:

    Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for IDEAL Initiatives and Programs, the Associate Director will coordinate fundraising activities for the IDEAL Racial Justice fundraising Initiative (RJI) and serve as the initiative's primary fundraiser. In this role, the incumbent will help coordinate the message, articulate the vision, and grow philanthropic partnerships as part of this Stanford Vision development effort.

    The Associate Director will take responsibility for prospect identification and solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities. They will cultivate and solicit, or arrange for the solicitation of, individuals who will be (or become) motivated to support Stanford and RJI. The ability to engage with a multitude of individuals, including faculty, university officers and staff, volunteers, alumni, friends and others outside Stanford during the course of this fundraising work will also be important for success in this role.

    Gift work requires understanding the university's overarching strategic priorities, as well as the programs and aspirations of all seven of Stanford's schools and the other large units. Consultation, coordination and collaboration with school or unit based colleagues is essential.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    • Understand the programs and aspirations of the Stanford Vision.
    • Support development colleagues, faculty, volunteers and staff to develop gift ideas and strategies and to foster relationships that will be productive for Stanford and the IDEAL RJI.
    • Develop a fundraising plan with solicitation goals, objectives, and strategies. Cultivate and solicit gifts to the university.
    • Manage an active portfolio of assigned prospects. Track solicitation assignments and progress.
    • Take responsibility for a wide range of fundraising activities, including identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, providing stewardship, coordinating volunteer fundraising efforts, and coordinating internal support activities.
    • Develop relationships leading to gifts in the $250,000 - $5,000,000 range.
    • Establish ongoing relationships with individual alumni and friends through personal visits, phone calls, and meaningful contacts.
    • Collaborate with central, school/unit colleagues, and event staff—design, manage, and execute events to cultivate and steward donors.
    • Travel as needed to engage donors in support of Initiative activities.
    • Work closely with other colleagues in development to align program goals with the overall giving goals of the university's development organization.
    • Stay informed on current university initiatives and activities.

    To be successful in this position, you will bring:

    • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, solicitation, and stewardship.
    • Demonstrated experience mentoring and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
    • Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support programs.
    • Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with OOD colleagues as well as within the schools and units, to achieve strategic fundraising results.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communicating across differences, cultural competence and cultural humility, and emotional intelligence.
    • Ability to meet deadlines and function effectively in a complex organizational environment demanding a high energy level, discretion, and flexibility.
    • Political acumen to collaborate effectively and diplomatically.
    • A commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
    • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.

    The expected pay range for this position is $130,000 – $145,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
