    Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Fuel Development group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Nuclear Fuels Development Research Engineer.

    Our team works an on-site 4x10 schedule located at our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off

    Responsibilities Include:


    The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a Nuclear Fuels Development Research Engineer in support of furthering basic and applied nuclear science.


    INLis recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment.

    MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development, and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

    The research professional supports research, development, and analysis with nuclear fuels and materials within one or more of the following technical areas: characterization, fabrication, sample preparation, instrument development, process development, irradiation experiment design, and irradiation experiment assembly.

    They are responsible to assist with the development and execution of processes to fabricate a wide range of advanced nuclear fuels and materials experiments.

    This individual demonstrates the ability to understand basic project needs, including providing input towards establishment of these needs, and subsequently act on these requirements to develop and execute activities and processes resulting in high-quality research deliverables.


    This includes:
    Supporting project leads in fuel feedstock production activities. This includes assisting with procuring, synthesizing, post-production processing, characterizing or other tasks required to develop or qualify fuel specimens under direction of the project lead

    Supporting project leads in creating procurement and sourcing strategies other non-fuel materials to include execution and follow-through of procurement actions to ensure material is procured in a timely manner and satisfies project requirements.

    This may include irradiation test hardware, cladding, instrumentation, chemical, and other laboratory equipment and supplies required to support performance of research activities
    Demonstrate the ability to understand project functional requirements, engineering requirements, and design drawings. Under guidance of the project lead, give to implementation of these requirements to support project specific objectives
    Contributes to development of fuel specifications and other documents in support of fuel development, process development, specimen qualification, or experiment assembly tasks
    May assist with developing quality assurance requirements for specific work tasks under guidance of the project lead. Responsible for implementation of project-specific quality assurance principals developed under this guidance
    Support effective project execution through adhering to a defined schedule and supporting the lead in identifying anticipated excursions before they manifest
    Manage and perform all tasks within scope, cost, and schedule, identifies problems and complications attributed to working within diverse and complex scope, and may lead in the implementation of process improvements
    Address practical matters, as directed, such as coordinating material movements, coordinating support organization fabrications and quality inspections, establishing efficient multi-facility process paths, and coordinating with subject matter experts in necessary areas in support of achieving programmatic objectives
    Lead and assist in the authorship of concluding reports and journal papers, as permitted by work scope
    Contributes to the development of safety documentation, and reviews work authorizing documents to ensure compliance with lab wide procedures and policies

    This role has significant responsibilities toward performance and direct oversight of work in nuclear and radiological facilities such that the risk to the public and environment must be maintained as low as possible.


    QUALIFICATIONS
    BS degree in engineering or hard science (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, physics, or similar) and 0-2 years experience
    Hands-on laboratory experience is preferred
    This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship

    Preferred Requirements:
    Must be willing to work with radiological materials
    Hands on knowledge of materials fabrication processes required
    Knowledge of nuclear fuel fabrication processes highly preferred
    Knowledge of and experience with, industrial safety and health requirements from the research perspective

    Salary Grade 200 ($79,140 - $130,572)/210 ($91,032 - $150,156)
