    Position Description:

Professor Goel's Computational Policy Lab at the Shorenstein Center at Harvard Kennedy School is seeking an Applications Professional. At the Computational Policy Lab, the team uses technology to tackle pressing issues in criminal justice, education, voting rights, and beyond. Leveraging advances in data science, the team studies the impact of policy choices at unprecedented scale, and builds algorithmic tools to guide high-stakes decisions. By bringing a computational perspective to public policy, the Lab aims to improve the lives of millions of people — especially those affected by inefficient and unfair systems and practices.

This position is housed within the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, a Harvard University research center dedicated to exploring and illuminating the intersection of media, technology, politics and public policy in theory and practice. Through teaching and research at the Kennedy School of Government and its program of visiting fellows, conferences and initiatives, the Center is at the forefront of its area of inquiry.

Duties Include, but are not limited to:

    • Independently perform complex applications/web development for projects of large to very large size and complexity; typically work as part of a team to implement business solutions.
    • Responsible for all aspects of application development cycle.
    • Code advanced and complex software solutions.
    • Participate fully in software development life cycle
    • Implement and support technical solutions to deliver business requirements
    • Identify and evaluate opportunities to improve services
    • Contribute ideas to coding best practices and new technologies
    • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients
    • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

Projects you will work on include:

    • PingPong. We're developing an online AI-based course tutor called PingPong that we think better supports learning than generic versions of AI like ChatGPT. PingPong is slated to be rolled out to universities and community colleges across the country in a large-scale randomized experiment evaluating its impact on learning outcomes.
    • Race-blind charging. We developed an AI-based algorithm that automatically removes race-related information from police reports, allowing prosecutors to make a "race-blind" decision about who to charge with a crime. California recently passed a law mandating that all prosecutors use race-blind charging by 2025. We're working with prosecutors across the country and many in California to implement and evaluate this novel criminal justice reform intervention.
    • Nudges for public defense clients. We developed a software platform that can send SMS-based nudges to public defender clients, helping them avoid jail time for missing court dates. We're testing several promising nudges in a series of randomized controlled trials, including small amounts of monetary assistance to help clients overcome financial barriers to court attendance.
