    • Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000


    The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

    The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Position Summary


    Reporting to the Director of Compliance, the Occupational Safety and Health Manager will oversee day-to-day occupational health and safety compliance activities for Columbia University Facilities and Operations at both the Morningside and Manhattanville campuses.

    Responsibilities

    Occupational Safety and Health


    • Develop, plan, and implement policies and procedures covering all aspects of occupational safety and health to prevent injury, occupational illness, and damage to property and ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Serve as a technical expert to advise management and staff on occupational safety and health programs and regulations and their application to their activities.
    • Interface with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
    • Implement a program of workplace safety and health audits and inspections to identify, assess, and correct hazards and to ensure regulatory compliance.
    • Conduct investigations into workplace accidents, injuries, and near misses, to determine causes and necessary corrective and preventative measures
    • Consult with and provide direction to Facilities Operations management and staff on safe work practices, engineering controls, and proper personal protective equipment use
    • Conduct exposure assessments for various safety and health hazards such as falls, confined space, electrical, lock-out tag-out, airborne particulates, vapors and gases, noise, heat stress, etc.
    • Manage and use industrial hygiene and other equipment for environmental assessments, respirator fit testing, and audiometry.
    • Manage SDS database and document availability for staff.
    • Attend and contribute to regular safety and compliance workgroups to achieve greater University-wide safety and compliance.
    Training


    • Manage safety and health training tracking, database, and records for Facilities and Operations
    • Identify training needs and coordinate training with Facilities departments
    • Draft, update, and deliver in-person and online training
    • Manage and coordinate with colleagues and outside vendors for both in-person and online training.
    • Manage toolbox talk program
    • Track and compile accident/illness data to help identify training needs.
    Minimum Qualifications


    • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree desirable. Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible occupational health and safety program experience.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to read, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local regulations. Ability to write clearly and communicate complex topics effectively. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
    • Solid analytical and problem-solving ability. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. Proficient in, but not limited to Microsoft Office products. Ability to prepare professional quality presentations and speak clearly and engagingly about complex issues before small and large groups.
    • Ability to wear a respirator. Ability to stand, walk, and negotiate occasional awkward work locations and paths of travel. Ability to work in a variety of physical environments, including weather/temperature extremes, potential confined spaces, and elevated locations; ability to periodically perform short-duration physical exertions, including stairs or ladder climbing in support of safety investigation, area or operation survey, or emergency response.
    • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for projects, training, special events, or emergency response.
    • Proven ability to motivate, direct, and coordinate activities of direct reports.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or related field preferred.
    • 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER
    • 10-Hour OSHA Construction Safety Training
    • Experience using industrial hygiene or environmental monitoring equipment
    • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist or Professional Engineer
