    Summary

    This recruitment will establish an employment list (valid up to one year) to fill future Customer Service Specialist Ill vacancies as they become available.

    This position is responsible for providing routine assistance to jail operations in the areas of cashiering, responding to telephone calls, handling, and maintaining jail residents' personal property, commissary, and public receptionist responsibilities at the facilities visitation window. Job duties and responsibilities require considerable physical activity, which may include moderate to strenuous lifting. Employees may supervise jail resident workers in performing assigned work and must interact with jail residents, corrections staff, and the general public on a regular basis.

    The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) is a department of over 900 employees consisting of five divisions: Seattle and Kent Detention Facilities, Juvenile Detention, Community Corrections and Administration, and includes positions represented by eleven bargaining units, in para-military hierarchal structure, (chain-of command) environment.

    The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) is a professional and nationally recognized organization that supports safe, vibrant, and healthy communities in partnership with other criminal justice and human service agencies. DAJD contributes to the public safety of the citizens of King County and Washington State by operating safe, secure, and humane detention facilities and community corrections programs, in an innovative and cost-effective manner.
    Job Duties
    • Receive, store, and issue a variety of materials, supplies, clothing, and linens; inventory jail resident personal property; package and label property.
    • Maintain security of records and personal property associated with these processes.
    • Provide program-specific information such as rules, regulations, and policies to customers via in-person or telephone, including greeting visitors, screening calls, and directing and responding to public and internal requests.
    • Accurately receive, inventory, store, and release jail residents' personal property, cash/checks, jewelry, and other valuables.
    • Accurately receive and process bail monies and official paperwork for inmates.
    • Receive, respond, and distribute jail resident service requests.
    • Process jail residents' money releases to the public in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Maintain accurate records of inmate accounts, including cash and property.
    • Maintain physical security of property room area and control of the commissary.
    • Enter and retrieve information on a computer terminal, including confidential information. Maintain accountability of the cash drawer balances.
    • Collect, store, and release inmate property and valuables. Dispose of contraband items, as directed.
    • Process inmate commissary orders, distribute and maintain precise records on each jail resident item.
    • Supervise inmate workers.
    • Use of excellent customer service skills, including written and verbal communications, in order to work well with co workers and the public.
    Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

    Applicants should have training or work experience that indicates ability to perform the job assignments stated above. This includes two or more years of cashiering, banking, or finance experience and two or more years of customer service/receptionist experience (i.e., answering phones, greeting clients, directing calls and visitors accordingly).
    • Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel and crawl.
    • All applicants must be able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
    • Ability to pass examination requirements which may include knowledge of basic arithmetic.
    • Ability to count cash and reconcile cash transactions, handle financial tasks with accuracy and the expectation of zero cash errors.
    • Must possess strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy of recording and tracking data and information.
    • Carries out all responsibilities in a professional, honest, ethical, and dependable manner. Maintains confidentiality of all information.
    • Have strong customer service skills that include patience, attentiveness, and positive speaking demeanor when interacting with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
    • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and assignments as needed. Knowledge of general office procedures, policies and practices, and ability to use computers and other general office equipment.

    Necessary Special Requirements: The person selected for this position will be required to complete a thorough background investigation process, including fingerprinting, criminal history check, and reference checks. A valid Washington State Driver's License or alternate ability to travel around the county by time of hire.

    Certification Requirements: CJIS certification is required from date of hire, training is provided on the job. Incumbents must be recertified on a set schedule.
