    Description

A global higher education leader in innovative teaching, research and public service, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill consistently ranks as one of the nation's top public universities.

Known for its beautiful campus, world-class medical care, commitment to the arts and top athletic programs, Carolina is an ideal place to teach, work and learn.

One of the best college towns and best places to live in the United States, Chapel Hill has diverse social, cultural, recreation and professional opportunities that span the campus and community.

University employees can choose from a wide range of professional training opportunities for career growth, skill development and lifelong learning and enjoy exclusive perks for numerous retail, restaurant and performing arts discounts, savings on local child care centers and special rates on select campus events.

UNC-Chapel Hill offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package, paid leave, and a variety of health, life and retirement plans and additional programs that support a healthy work/life balance.

    Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Energy Services Department consists of five groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generates electricity and steam, and the distribution of steam throughout campus and UNC Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater (for the use and conservation of water, as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); and (5) Administration (provides GIS, SCADA, coordination of operational information technologies, strategic planning, and management functions).

Energy Services supports the University's mission of teaching, research and public service through the acquisition, generation, distribution and energy monitoring of utilities and infrastructure by continuously improving safety, excellence, affordability and sustainability,

    Position Summary

The Associate Director of Energy Services is responsible for the strategic, capital, and financial planning and budgeting for Energy Services.

This position manages Energy Services Information Technology and Project Planning & Implementation.

The Associate Director is the main point of contact for major customers' senior management, including UNC Health, Athletics, Student Affairs, and various auxiliary operations such as Carolina Dining Services and the Carolina Inn.

This position is the contact person for external utility providers, Duke Energy, OWASA, and Dominion Energy. The Associate Director establishes utility rates, oversees utility billings, and manages the administrative functions for Energy Services.

Energy Services includes the following operating units that provide the full range of energy services to the Carolina campus and UNC Health: Chilled Water, Cogeneration (combined heat and power), Electric Systems, and Water Resources (including water, sewer, non-potable water, and stormwater).

The University employs a district energy strategy, with plants located strategically across the campus providing heating and cooling to buildings rather than each building having its own heating and cooling capacity.

The various units are highly interrelated, with the products of some serving as critical components of the production processes of others.

All Energy Services units are operated as receipts-supported entities.

Campus units are billed for services, with the academic and health affairs areas representing about 65% of billings and the receipt-supported regions the remainder.

Energy Services is a highly complex operation with revenues of over 120 million annually. The capital program includes about 500 million new facilities and infrastructure to be constructed over the next ten years. Energy Services is larger than most utility companies in North Carolina. For example, Piedmont Electric Co-op has revenues of about 40 million annually. The energy business continues to become increasingly more complex.

The deregulation of utilities in several states and the entry of private corporations that broker energy into the marketplace has considerably increased pricing volatility, affected the availability of various fuels, and made strategic infrastructure planning much more complex.

Increased climatological change resulting in more broadly variable weather patterns complicates planning and contributes to price volatility. Global political events also significantly affect the availability of fuels as well as pricing. In addition, environmental regulations, which are becoming more stringent yearly, affect fuel and infrastructure decisions.
