    Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

    This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

    JOB SUMMARY

    This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Inspection Services Section of the Development Center in the Development Services Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies in the department, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Journeyman level skill and knowledge relevant to the electrical field must be acquired prior to assuming the duties of this position. Essential job functions include: traveling to various construction sites to conduct rough and final electrical inspections relating to electric wiring construction, installation, repair, alteration; and maintenance of electric wiring, apparatus and fixtures to ensure compliance with safety and quality regulations as are specified and required by the Oklahoma City Electrical Codes. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that electrical systems are properly installed in order to provide for the safety, health and welfare of the general public. All electrical inspections are performed independently with unusual problems or situations referred to the Electrical Inspector II and/or the Chief Electrical Inspector. The employee must exhibit tact and diplomacy in communicating with citizens, contractors, building owners or managers, and departmental personnel concerning relevant aspects of work performed. Work products are periodically reviewed at the discretion of the Electrical Inspector II and/or Chief Electrical Inspector.

    VETERANS PREFERENCE

    Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of the current adopted Oklahoma City Electrical Codes and Standards.
  • Knowledge of proper materials and devices used in electrical construction.
  • Knowledge of and skill in following safety procedures.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and drawings.
  • Skill in assessing the overall condition of different electrical systems.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment.
  • Skill in recording information accurately.
  • Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and apply knowledge of electrical codes to work performed.
  • Ability to conduct rough, ground, and final inspections.
  • Ability to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to make objective decisions.
  • Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Electrical Journeyman License.*
  • Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Electrical Inspector License.**
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician, Electrical Contractor or Electrical Inspector.**
  • Possession of a valid driver license (Operator).
  • *NOTE: Licenses must be issued by the State of Oklahoma or a state having reciprocity with the State of Oklahoma.

    **NOTE: City Ordinance (Chapter 18 Electrical Code, Section requires that the employee shall have at least five years' experience as a licensed electrical contractor or journeyman in a municipality of 20,000 or larger population or have at least five years' experience as an electrical inspector in a municipality of 20,000 or larger population. The Electrical Inspector I shall hold at least a current state electrical journeyman license and possess a current state electrical inspector license.

    The Electrical Inspector I shall not be interested directly or indirectly in any electrical business within the City. The Electrical Inspector I shall not perform any electrical work within the City.

    State law and/or City Ordinance require that the employee possess or obtain a permanent State Electrical Inspector License within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/ demotion. If the individual selected does not possess a permanent State Electrical Inspector License, that individual will be classified as a Provisional Trades Inspector and compensated at the Provisional Trades Inspector salary range until such time as the license is obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a State Electrical Inspector License within one year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Inside and outside; exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
  • Possibility of falls from working on and around slippery surfaces such as construction sites after it has rained, snowed, etc.
  • Will work from ladders, floors with no surrounding walls, etc., 12 feet or more above ground level.
  • Will be working near moving machinery, power tools, and vehicles in motion.
  • Exposed to steady and fairly loud noises from machinery and equipment used at construction sites.
  • Exposed to large amounts of dust when performing inspections at construction sites.
  • Possibility of exposure to x-rays when conducting inspections of hospitals; and possible exposure to microwaves when inspecting television and radio stations.
  • Possibility of severe electrical shock when inspecting electrical connections that handle electrical power up to 480 volts or more.
  • May be required to work irregular hours such as shifts, weekends, and holidays, and be on 24-hour call.
  • Local travel on a daily basis to conduct inspections.
  • Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Extent flexibility and mobility enough to bend, twist, climb, and reach out to perform duties such as conducting inspections.
  • Arm-hand steadiness, manual dexterity, and finger dexterity enough to perform duties such as operating manual and power tools to remove panels, covers, etc.
  • Near vision enough to read items such as blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, code books, equipment labels, etc.
  • Far vision enough to perform duties such as driving a vehicle.
  • Visual color discrimination enough to check installation of color-coded wires.
  • Speech and hearing enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person, by telephone, and in a noisy environment.
  • OTHER DETAILS

    Note: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.

    Pay Method: City employees are required to receive pay electronically, either via direct deposit or pay card.

    Background Investigation, Drug Testing, Physical Examination: Upon a conditional offer of employment/acceptance of position, the City of Oklahoma City will conduct a criminal history background check for external applicants. Applicants will be provided contact information for any third-party reporting agencies used to collect background information in connection with conditional offers of employment.

    If the position accepted includes a driver license (commercial or non-commercial) Job Requirement, the City of Oklahoma City will obtain a Motor Vehicle Report for internal and external applicants.

    If the position accepted is safety sensitive and/or a driving position, internal and external applicants will be provided a copy of the City of Oklahoma City's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy prior to being directed for a drug test.

    If the position accepted is cyber security sensitive, internal and external applicants will be subject to a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Interstate Identification Index (III) Fingerprint Background check. Additionally, employees in this job classification must complete Level 4 Security Awareness Training and pass an online certification test.
