    POSITION SUMMARY:
    This position handles the mechanical maintenance and repair of all PDX facility cranes, dry-docks, buildings, equipment, and piping systems.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Replace defective parts of machine or adjust clearances and alignment of moving parts.
    • Align machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs.
    • Connect power unit to machines or steam piping to equipment, and test unit to evaluate its mechanical operation.
    • Repair and lubricate machines and equipment.
    • Assemble and install equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
    • Position steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings, to determine work procedures.
    • Signal crane operator to lower basic assembly units to bedplate, and align unit to centerline.
    • Insert shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
    • Move machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.
    • Attach moving parts and subassemblies to basic assembly unit, using hand tools and power tools.
    • Assemble machines, and bolt, weld, rivet, or otherwise fasten them to foundation or other structures, using hand tools and power tools.
    • Lay out mounting holes, using measuring instruments, and drill holes with power drill.
    • Bolt parts, such as side and deck plates, jaw plates, and journals, to basic assembly unit.
    • Level bedplate and establish centerline, using straightedge, levels, and transit.
    • Dismantle machines, using hammers, wrenches, crowbars, and other hand tools.
    • Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items, using portable gas heating equipment.
    • Dismantle machinery and equipment for shipment to installation site, usually performing installation and maintenance work as part of team.
    • Construct foundation for machines, using hand tools and building materials such as wood, cement, and steel.
    • Install robot and modify its program, using teach pendant.
    • Operate engine lathe to grind, file, and turn machine parts to dimensional specifications.
    • Have the ability to work at heights.
    • Have the ability to work in confined spaces.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or GED preferred. 4 years relevant work experience preferred. Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.

    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    • Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group.
    • Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.
    • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English

    Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (mechanical aptitude required, continuing on the job training will be provided for a candidate with the desire to learn this trade):
    • Reads and understands blueprints and assembly drawings.
    • Understand and demonstrate the use of all standard shop measuring tools:

    - Micrometers inside, outside, and depth.

    - Vernier scales and/or dial calipers.

    - Rulers and tape measures.

    - Indicators.

    - Protractors, Vernier, linear.

    - Firm joint and spring joint calipers inside and outside.

    - Height gauges.

    - pi tapes.
    • Use hand tools (i.e., files and types of files, hacksaws, wrenches, porta-powers, taps and dies).
    • Show Proficiency in working with some of the following items:

    - Power boilers

    - Flame monitoring equipment

    - Feed water systems

    - Meters

    - Water softeners

    - Regulators

    - Heat exchangers

    - Pumps

    - Deaerators

    - Valves

    - Strainers

    - Natural Gas, and light to heavy fuel systems

    - Steam and condensate systems

    - Air compressors

    - Cooling Systems

    - Chillers - Dryers

    - Cooling Towers

    - Control Air Systems

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Sitting: Occasionally- may sit 2 to 8 hours per day on bench, stool, or other surface.
    • Standing: Continually- stands up to thirty minutes uninterrupted, up to 5 1/2 hours per day while disassembling, repairing and reassembling machinery or machine parts. Generally stands on level concrete or other surface.
    • Walking: Frequently- walks less than 100 feet interrupted, up to fifty times per day while moving around shop area. Rarely may walk 1/2 mile to work site. Walks on asphalt, concrete or steel surface. May walk on ramps or other graded surfaces.
    • Crouching: Occasionally- crouches less than 5 minutes uninterrupted, up to 20 times per day.
    • Kneeling/Crawling: Rarely- kneels less than 5 minutes at a time, less than 30 minutes total per day. May kneel on one or both knees depending upon the setting. Rarely- Kneels on level concrete surface. Crawling: Not Required.
    • Stooping: Rarely- stoops over machinery to observe machine or machine parts or to work on same. May stoop up to 15 minutes at a time, up to 2 1/2 hours per day total.
    • Twisting:

    Knees: Rarely- while accessing or viewing machine or machine parts. May alternate with kneeling.

    Waist: Occasionally- twists at waist while retrieving tools or parts from storage areas or to reach for controls. May twist hundreds of times throughout the day.

    Neck: Occasionally- twists in all direction while observing work in process. May hold position up to 30 minutes at a time.

    Climbing: Occasionally- climbs up steps on cranes, dry-docks, buildings, or on tables to access machines to set up or make adjustments. Climbs up to 20 times per day on some days.

    Balancing: Occasionally- while climbing to and from work sites, or climbing on machines.

    Leg/Foot Use (To repetitively operate machine controls): Occasionally- operates pipe and bolt threader which requires a foot pedal control.
    • Reaching:

    Overhead: Occasionally- reaches for overhead machine controls or hoists. Reaches overhead less than 3 minutes at a time.

    Extension: Frequently- extends arms while disassembling, repairing, and reassembling machines or machine parts.
    • Handling/Grasping: Frequently- uses tools, machine parts, machine controls while in the process of repairing, disassembling, and reassembling machine or machine part. May need to use one or both hands.
    • Fingering/Feeling: Frequently- uses nuts, bolts, fine measuring equipment, other small pieces of equipment in the process of performing assembly/reassembly and repairs. Works to .001" precision.
    • Pushing/Pulling: (Average) applies 25 pounds of force frequently with upper body while using wrenches, pry bars, etc. (Maximum) Occasionally applies up to 50 pounds of upper body force while pushing wrenches, pry bars, etc.
    • Lifting/Carrying: (Average) Carries weights of up to 20 pounds (including small tool box, individual tools, machine parts). (Maximum) Occasionally carries tool box weighing approximately 45 pounds between shop and work site, a distance of approximately 2,000 feet. May lift items weighing up to 45 pounds ground to shoulder level a maximum of 6 times per day.
    • Other physical demands: Rarely- works while lying on back. May need to contort entire body to reach all areas.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    • Works indoors: Occasionally- works in a warehouse machine shop setting that is heated but not air conditioned.
    • Works outdoors: Frequently- walks to and from project sites.
    • Safety equipment required: Hard hat, eye and ear protection, respirator, no loose clothing, must wear leather shoes/work boots.
    • Other Exposures: May be exposed to acids, de-greasing cleaners, paints, solvents, oil, grease, liquid steel/putty, oil vapors, petroleum, caustics, fumes, noise, raw sewage, and asbestos.
    • Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses hand and power tools, wrenches, hoists, machine tooling equipment such as boring, grinding, tapping, lathe, and drilling equipment. Uses micrometers/dial indicators and other measuring instruments. Chainfalls, knee mills, radial arm drill press, upright drill press, overhead cranes (pendant controlled), portable machining equipment, come-a-longs, port-a-power, cut off saws.
    • Required hygiene standards: Per company standards.
