    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
    The purpose of this position is to oversee breastfeeding promotion and support activities within the Guilford County Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and community.
    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

    The WIC Lactation Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of breastfeeding activities of the local agency. The role ensures that local agency staff are properly trained on breastfeeding education and support and collaborates with community breastfeeding stakeholders. An individual in this role is current on breastfeeding program management policies, procedures, and resources; disseminates necessary information to local agency staff and monitors agency's compliance. The WIC Lactation Program Coordinator serves as one of the agency's designated breastfeeding experts, providing breastfeeding support to WIC participants experiencing complex maternal and /or infant breastfeeding issues This position manages the PH Infant Care Counselors and WIC Lactation Consultant and reports to the Nutrition Program Director.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of local agency breastfeeding activities
    • Work with local agency management and staff to integrate breastfeeding promotion and support activities as a standard part of WIC Program clinic services
    • Ensure timely and accurate breastfeeding education, counseling, and support for participants
    • Ensure that WIC staff are properly trained on breastfeeding education and support by providing or facilitating orientation to breastfeeding activities, breastfeeding supplies issuance, and annual continuing education on breastfeeding and maintaining documentation of WIC staff who have completed required trainings,
    • As a supervisor, assist with the daily implementation and coordination of WIC services according to Guilford County and North Carolina WIC Program policies and procedures.
    • Accurately evaluate and document the anthropometric, biochemical, dietary and other health related data when determining medical/nutritional risk
    • Provide timely technical expertise and counseling to high risk participants and participants with complex breastfeeding situations. Assess individual's breastfeeding practice, develop and document plan of care, and provide appropriate follow-up and referrals.
    • Manage the issuance, inventory, and maintenance of breastfeeding supplies and ensure adequate documentation by monitoring on quarterly basis
    • Manage Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Program and monitor local agency peer counseling activities to ensure they are carried out in accordance with Federal, State, and local agency policies and procedures
    • Responsible for recruitment, supervision, and mentoring of peer counselors.

    • Experience with common office software programs
    Typical Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in nutrition dietetics, community nutrition, public health or related field; International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC), and two (2) years of relevant experience including a minimum of one year of counseling breastfeeding dyads.

    Preferred Education and Experience Requirements:

    Master's in Public Health or related field; International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC), minimum of one year of counseling breastfeeding dyads, and experience of the WIC Program or other community or public health nutrition program; supervisory or lead experience preferred.

    Administering the Class:
    Administering the Class - Candidates should provide documentation of certification status from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and university or college transcripts.

    Supplemental Information

    May Require Driving:

    This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.

    If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
